Barcelona Femeni and Spain midfielder is heading to the Women's Super League after agreeing a deal with the London City Lionesses.
Why This Is One Of The Biggest Transfers In Women's Football History
One of the greatest players in Womens football history has announced today that she will be moving to London to join the most exciting team in the WSL, the London City Lionesses.
Winning countless trophies with Barcelona, a World Cup with Spain, and two Ballon d'Or awards to her name with the potential to secure a third at the 2026 ceremony in October, Putellas' decision to leave Barcelona has understandably been global news.
Having achieved everything possible with the Spanish giants, leaving off the back of a quadruple winning season felt like perfect timing.
There has understandably been lots of bids and opportunities presented to her across the world of football, but the option to introduce the Putellas' brand to the UK was the eventual winner.
Given the calibre of player, and the relative difference in the scale of club which she has chosen to join, this is arguably the biggest transfer in the history of the Women's football.
How London City Lionesses Are Building A WSL Contender
Their journey as a trailblazing women-only independent football club continues, as they sign one of the biggest names in world football.
Recruiting a player of this stature should drive significant growth in attendances and fan engagement, not just for the Lionesses, but across the entirety of the Women's Super League.
Putellas joins a host of high profile players who have moved to owner Michele Kang's side, with french international Grace Geyoro, experienced striker Nikita Parris, and Swedish veteran Kosovare Asllani joining for the LCL's first season in the WSL last year.
Already in this transfer window, they've announced the signing of former England and PSG goalkeeper, Mary Earps, proven German attacking threat Nicole Anyomi from Eintracht Frankfurt, and Danish defender Janni Thomsen from Utah Royals in the NWSL.
Kang's intent is clear, to try and create a new powerhouse team in the WSL, and with clear intent to push for Barcelona's Mapi Leon, this might not be the end of the transfers before the 2026-27 season starts in September.
Amongst the new signings, they've also secured contract extensions for young talents Freya Godfrey and Poppy Pattinson, who will look to increase their contributions to the side as part of a more long term project.
The Lionesses' will aim to improve on an impressive debut season finishing in 6th place, which they'll see as a real possibility especially after the level of talent they've now added to their squad.
How Putellas Changes The WSL Landscape
With multiple blockbuster signings for LCL over the past two seasons, being topped by Putellas today, the remaining teams in the Women's Super League will be struggling to keep up with this growth.
Arsenal have been the most active side in the transfer window so far, adding top talent like Georgia Stanway, and Selina Cerci. They also announced today, the signing of Switzerland international midfielder Geraldine Reuteler from Eintracht Frankfurt.
For Chelsea, it was a disappointing season, and with clubs around them being active in the market, you anticipate they're looking to make their own big name signings to go alongside contract extensions for Aggie Beever-Jones, Baltimore and Lucy Bronze.
Current title holders Manchester City, and fourth place Manchester United, are also yet to show signs of transfer activity, aside from City pinching Beth Mead from Arsenal at the start of the window.
It's clear that London City Lionesses are raising the bar for investment in the league, and they will look to utilise the experience and skill of star signing Putellas, to really challenge the rest of the top sides in the newly expanded WSL division for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
