Despite being at the FIFA World Cup with Argentina, much of Europe has been talking about Como sensation Nico Paz.
The young midfielder has been at the centre of a transfer tussle involving Europe's most successful club, Real Madrid, after turning heads in Italy.
Como have reached an agreement with Los Blancos for the €60 million transfer of Paz, hours after the youngster was signed by the Spanish giants, themselves, for just €9 million.
How, then have we got here, you may ask.
Why Nico Paz Left Real Madrid in Search of Regular Football
Nico Paz is the son of former Argentina international Pablo Paz, born to a Spanish mother in Tenerife.
The 21-year-old began his journey to professional football exactly a decade ago, joining Real Madrid's La Fabrica academy to develop his skills.
Paz made his senior bow for Los Blancos aged 19 in November 2023, and was a regular in the Real Madrid squad under Carlo Ancelotti.
The attacking midfielder played eight times and scored once, and was named in the matchday squad 11 times without making an appearance.
With both Arda Guler and Jude Bellingham ahead of him in the pecking order for the Spanish giants, Paz decided to move elsewhere for regular minutes in the summer of 2024.
The then-teenager opted to find his path instead of waiting for good fortune to smile on him in Madrid, and left the club to join newly-promoted Serie A side Como.
The Argentine was undoubtedly considered as one of the finest talents in the Real Madrid pipeline, but the lack of a viable pathway forced him to seek a different path to global recognition.
The Fabregas Factor: How Como Provided the Perfect Tactical Lab for Growth
Los Blancos were keen to retain control over the future of Paz, whose talent was not in doubt, and they inserted multiple buyback clauses in the deal that took him to Como.
Managed by Spaniard Cesc Fabregas, Como provided a fertile ground for youth development due to their integration of youth with experience.
A talented attacking midfielder in his day, Fabregas handed the keys to the Como set-up to Paz, allowing him to thrive in an attacking midfield role.
Paz benefited greatly from playing under Fabregas and quickly established himself as one of Europe's finest young players.
The youngster scored six goals and provided eight assists in 35 league appearances in his debut season in Italy, winning the league's U-23 Player of the Season award.
Paz had the option of returning to the Bernabeu after just one season in Italy, but the talented midfielder preferred to continue his development at Como. There was also an approach from Tottenham Hotspur, which the youngster turned down.
A fine second season with the Serie A side saw the youngster produce 13 goals and seven assists in 40 appearances, earning him a place in Argentina's FIFA World Cup squad.
Inside the Unique Real Madrid–Como Transfer Agreement
Real Madrid returned into the picture for Paz as they informed Como of their intention to trigger their €9 million buyback clause for the midfielder.
With multiple attacking midfielders on their books, it was clear that the Spanish giants had no immediate need for Paz, and a move to Spain would likely stunt his development.
Los Blancos made a proposal to Como: Pay €60 million to re-sign Paz or we sell him to someone else. Faced with losing a prized asset, the Serie A side forked out the transfer fee to sign the midfielder permanently once more.
The Spanish giants retain a buyback clause in the new deal, still, and will be entitled to a percentage of a future sale to any other side, as was revealed by Fabrizio Romano.
Madrid once again showed that they remain invested in the future of Paz buy retaining control over his future, even while he has left permanently once again.
The deal benefits every party involved, particularly Paz, who will continue to develop in a pressure-free environment in Italy, where he is a major protagonist.
The Blueprint for the Next Gen: What Academy Talents Can Learn from Nico Paz’s Rise
Nico Paz has risen from a prospect at one of Europe's biggest clubs to a player coveted by multiple top clubs around Europe, largely because of his self-belief.
The youngster could have been comfortable with 15-20 minutes here and there in a Real Madrid shirt for a few years before heading out of the club, but he chose the more daunting route.
Paz moved to a different country at 19, displaying his trust in his abilities and readiness to prove himself outside of his comfort zone, and has benefited greatly from the decision.
Many young players across Europe struggle with the decision of taking a step back and finding their own path, preferring to remain in the familiar environment of their boyhood clubs.
Nico Paz has provided a very good example of how young players can pursue their own paths, even when pathways do not seem open in their team. He will play in the UEFA Champions League in the 2026-27 season, and will surely be a transfer target for clubs next summer, as well.
