Bundesliga outfit FC Koln have agreed a €1 million deal to sign 21-year-old Australia international Paul Okon-Engstlerfollowing his impressive performances at the FIFA World Cup.

The quadrennial tournament often catapults young players into prominence, causing them to get noticed by European clubs, and this has been the case with Okon-Engstler.

FC Koln Reach Agreement for Paul Okon-Engstler

Paul Okon-Engstler was born into a footballing family in Belgium when his father, Paul Okon, was on the books of Oostende.

The family returned to their country when Okon-Engstler was one year old, and he began his journey into professional football in his native Australia.

FC Koln have agreed personal terms for a four-year deal until 2030 for the midfielder, who only joined Sydney FC last summer from the youth set-up of Benfica.

He also enjoyed a spell in Belgium with Club Brugge between 2019 and 2022, playing in youth tournaments for the club which his father once represented.

Okon-Engstler is due to travel to Germany to complete the formalities of his transfer and begin his spell in the Bundesliga.

World Cup Performances Earn Bundesliga Move

Okon-Engstler was named in Australia's FIFA World Cup squad, with his father working as an assistant to Head Coach Tony Popovic.

He had only six caps under his belt before the World Cup invitation came and was the second-youngest player in the Socceroos squad for the tournament.

He started the first two games of the tournament, providing an assist in his World Cup debut against Turkey.

Coach Popovic dropped him to the bench for the final group game against Paraguay, giving him only six minutes in the goalless draw.

The young midfielder played in extra-time as the Socceroos lost to Egypt on penalties in the Round of 32, ending their hopes of progression in the competition.

Okon-Engstler caught the eye with his tidy play in possession and his intelligence in midfield, prompting FC Koln to sign him on a permanent basis.
