History was made at the 2026 Gothia Cup as Kenyan outfit Legacy Academy clinched the title in the U14 category to make a bold statement in one of the largest invitational youth tournaments in the World.
Unsurprisingly, their return to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was met with applause as their 89-member delegation touched down on home soil.
The final, which took place at the SKF Arena, witnessed the young Kenyans edge out Swedish side Lerums IS 1-0 in the final to lift the Boys Under-14 Play-off A title.
With David Jesse Adama netting the decisive early goal in the tenth minute, Legacy became the first East African club in history to win a Play-off A trophy in that category at the Gothia Cup.
What is the Gothia Cup?
Founded in 1975 and organised annually by Swedish club BK Hacken, the Gothia Cup (World Youth Cup) is widely regarded as the largest international youth football tournament in the world.
Every summer, Gothenburg transforms into a global football festival. The 2026 edition brought together 1,956 teams representing 78 nations, competing across more than a hundred pitches.
Over its history, the tournament has hosted iconic figures early in their careers, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andrea Pirlo, and Xabi Alonso. For an African academy, securing a Play-off A title on this stage serves as a major endorsement of player development quality.
How Legacy Academy Won The Gothia Cup
For head coach Derrick Ochieng Otieno, the 2026 campaign was built on redemption. After suffering a semi-final elimination during their 2025 appearance, the squad returned to Sweden with heightened focus, relying on an aggressive attack supported by a disciplined backline.
Coach Otieno noted that the disappointment of the previous year served as the primary motivation for the team, adding that the players approached the tournament with a strong belief that they could go all the way.
"It has been a successful trip. We went with five teams, and out of the five teams, U14, which is the one that I am leading, scored 33 goals and conceded only three, and we came home with the MVP award," Otieno said.
"This time, we were very optimistic and it got to the players' heads and they believed they could do it. Last year, they lost in the semis and this year it was all about redemption.”
The coach praised his players for believing in themselves and said the historic success would serve as a springboard for greater achievements.
"I am very happy when I see how the players have fought for this, and we came home with a trophy. In the next few years, I know we are going from one level to another," he added.
Christian Amani was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Boys Under-14 category.
"It has been a beautiful trip. The games were not easy but we did our best. We scored many goals and I was awarded as the MVP. I thank Legacy Academy for this opportunity. It has helped me build my career," Amani said.
That focus was evident throughout the campaign. Legacy dominated Group 13 with four straight victories, opening with a 4-0 win over IF Centern Vit before defeating Solangens BK 7-1, IFK Nykoping 7-0, and Virestad IF 3-0.
Carrying that momentum into the Play-off A knockout bracket, the team maintained defensive stability against international opposition.
They eliminated IF Centern Bla 2-0 in the Round of 16 and Nykopings BI 3-0 in the quarterfinals, before seeing off Argentina's CEF 18 Tucuman 3-1 and Ghana's ProGen FC 3-0 in the semifinals.
In total, Legacy completed a flawless nine-match run, scoring 33 goals while conceding only twice. Solomon Velenga led the team's scoring charts with nine goals, supported by David Jesse Adama with seven and Vincent Fredrick with five. Midfielder Christian Amani was named the Most Valuable Player for the Boys Under-14 category.

Legacy Academy's Success Went Beyond The Under-14s
While the Under-14s captured the headlining silverware, Legacy Football Academy entered five teams across different divisions, showcasing depth across their setup.
The Under-13 squad topped their group phase with four wins and a draw, driven by goals from Brivon Nyandika, Jack Weko, and Gavin Okech.
The Under-12 boys secured a second-place group finish behind strong performances from Mwangi Njenga, Zandro Obiero, and Elijah Luusa.
The Under-16 side also placed second in their pool, with Innocent Media, Mohammed Mbemba, and Cyril Obiero leading their attack.
Legacy's performance in Sweden highlights the steady progress of Kenyan youth development setups on the international stage.
