On Wednesday night, Wrexham Women secured a landmark 4-2 victory over FC Pyunik in the first qualifying round semi-final of the UEFA Women's Champions League at the Racecourse Ground.
Despite entering the competition with the lowest coefficient of any side involved, the Red Dragons overcame the Armenian champions to become the first Welsh women's side to win a European fixture, as well as the first Welsh team to score in a European match for over six years.
Goals from Katie Barker, Lili Jones and Ava Suckley secured a memorable victory against a Pyunik side with a fully professional setup, compared to Wrexham's semi-professional status.
The Welsh outfit also had to overcome an early setback after falling 1-0 behind, but showed resilience and attacking quality to turn the game around and secure their progression.
Led by former Leicester City manager Jenny Sugarman, Wrexham claimed their first-ever top-flight title last season by winning Wales' Adran Premier, earning qualification for the Champions League qualifying rounds for the first time in the club's history.
After the match, Sugarman said: "Sometimes we don't make things easy for ourselves, but I think everyone enjoys that bit of drama.
"We work really hard on our team spirit, and it isn't something that happens on accident. The values are principles that we have aren't just things on a wall, it's something that we epitomise every day."
What's Next For Wrexham Women In The UEFA Women's Champions League?
The UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying process is split into three rounds, with each stage featuring mini tournaments made up of four teams. Clubs compete in single-leg semi-finals and finals, with only the winners progressing to the next qualifying round.
The qualifying phase is also divided into two separate routes: the Champions Path, reserved for domestic league winners across Europe such as Wrexham, and the League Path, which features top-placed teams from Europe's strongest leagues that did not win their domestic title.
The latter includes some of the biggest clubs in world football, such as Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Juventus.
However, Wrexham would not face any of those sides unless they reached the competition proper, with Czech champions Sparta Prague currently the highest-ranked team in the Champions Path.
With their landmark victory secured though, Jenny Sugarman's side will next face Latvian champions Riga FC Women in the Group 3 final of the first qualifying round on Saturday, 25 July, once again at the STOK Cae Ras/Racecourse Ground.
Should Wrexham progress, they will advance to the second qualifying round, where a semi-final against Danish champions HB Køge awaits.
Victory there would take the Red Dragons into the Group 2 final, where they would face either Lithuanian champions Gintra or Scottish side Hearts for a place in the next stage of the competition.
Reaching the final, or even winning the third-place play-off in the second qualifying round, would still secure Wrexham a place in either the first or second qualifying round of the UEFA Women's Europa Cup, keeping alive their hopes of reaching a major European competition in the tournament's second season.
Regardless, Wrexham will have to take one step at a time and focus on each challenge as it arrives, with their immediate attention now turning towards Riga and the opportunity to continue their historic European journey.
