Bayern Munich are set to strengthen their financial position off the pitch, with a new shareholder expected to support the club’s long-term strategy.
The Bundesliga champions have built a reputation for combining success on the pitch with a carefully managed ownership structure. Bayern have maintained majority control through their registered association, FC Bayern München e.V., while allowing selected outside investors to hold minority stakes.
Now, a long-standing relationship with a prominent family business is set to enter a new phase, potentially giving the club greater financial flexibility while preserving the principles at the heart of its ownership model.
Bayern Munich confirm Viessmann Generations Group as new shareholder
Bayern have confirmed that Viessmann Generations Group is set to become a shareholder in FC Bayern München AG, with the transaction involving the final available equity stake in the club.
The Munich-based family business is acquiring a stake originally representing five per cent. As the transaction will take place through a capital increase, Viessmann Generations Group’s resulting shareholding will amount to just under 6.7 per cent.
The deal is also reportedly worth approximately €250 million, according to reports cited by CFBayern Insider. The figure has not been disclosed in Bayern’s official announcement.
The club’s existing ownership structure will remain firmly in place, with FC Bayern München e.V. retaining 70 per cent of the shares in accordance with its articles of association.
Adidas, Audi and Allianz will each hold just under 7.8 per cent following completion of the transaction, meaning the club will continue to maintain a clear majority stake.
Viessmann Generations Group CEO Max Viessmann is also expected to join the supervisory board of FC Bayern München AG. The board will consequently expand from nine members to ten, adding the perspective of an international family business to the club’s decision-making structure.
Bayern president Herbert Hainer welcomed the development, explaining that the investment would strengthen the ownership structure and provide greater flexibility during a period of constant change.
The partnership will officially take effect once it is registered in the commercial register.
How Bayern Munich plan to protect their financial independence
The investment represents more than a change to Bayern’s shareholder structure. It also reinforces the club’s commitment to remaining financially independent while competing with Europe’s leading teams.
The additional equity is expected to give Bayern greater scope to pursue long-term projects, particularly in sustainability, internationalisation and digitalisation. Viessmann Generations Group will contribute both capital and experience gained from operating an international family business.
The two organisations have worked together since 2018, when their brand partnership began. That relationship has since developed into a wider global climate partnership, while Max Viessmann already serves on the advisory committee of FC Bayern München e.V.
Speaking about the move, Viessmann said the partnership was the next step in a relationship built around shared values and a long-term outlook.
"FC Bayern and Viessmann have worked closely together since 2018. We are now taking the next step by becoming a shareholder of FC Bayern," he said.
"As a fourth-generation family business, we want to contribute both capital and our entrepreneurial experience to the collaboration."
Viessmann Generations Group operates in more than 40 countries, with around 6,000 employees across its industrial core and annual revenue of approximately €2 billion. Its activities include cold-room and cleanroom solutions, local and district heating, and power-grid infrastructure.
For Bayern, the agreement offers access to that business experience while keeping the club’s majority ownership with its registered association.
The distinction is significant in an increasingly competitive football landscape, where clubs continue to explore different ways of financing growth and challenging for major honours.
Bayern’s approach allows them to strengthen their financial position without surrendering control to an outside investor. With the new shareholder set to join an established group of partners, the club will look to use the additional flexibility to support its ambitions for years to come.
