There is a reason the World Cup is the greatest sporting event on the planet. For one month every four years, the whole world stands still to watch their team compete for the iconic trophy.

With the 2026 World Cup expanding to 48 teams, fans wondered if the chance of smaller teams competing would be out the window. Instead, the new format has blown the door wide open for even more giant-killings. To celebrate the chaos of the beautiful game, we are ranking the top 10 biggest World Cup shocks of all time.

10. Paraguay 1-1 Germany (4-3 Penalties) 2026

We didn't have to wait long for the 2026 knockout stages to deliver peak World Cup chaos. Facing a dominant German side in the Round of 32 last night, Paraguay pulled off an absolute masterclass under head coach Gustavo Alfaro.

After Julio Enciso's stunning 42nd-minute opener was canceled out by Kai Havertz, the South Americans dug deep, dragging the four-time champions all the way to a penalty shootout. In a result no one predicted, Germany suffered their first-ever World Cup elimination on penalties.

The upset sent such shockwaves back home that Paraguayan President Santiago Pena immediately declared a nationwide public holiday!

9. Cape Verde 0-0 Spain 2026

The first two entries on the list are the two most recent results which had everyone scratching their heads.

Making their debut on the world stage this summer, African island nation Cape Verde stepped onto the pitch against reigning European champions Spain and completely tore up the script.

Thanks to an absolute masterclass from 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha making seven saves from the gods to keep it goalless. The island side most people thought would just be happy to be there but now have made the knockout stage at the first time of asking.

8. South Korea 2-1 Italy 2002

Co-hosts South Korea were expected to exit the tournament when they met a star-studded Italy in the Round of 16. Instead, in one of the most dramatic and controversial matches in history, Ahn Jung-hwan headed home a 117th-minute Golden Goal to send the Azzurri packing.

The Italian outrage was so severe that Ahn’s club contract with Serie A side Perugia was immediately terminated just for performing for his nation.

7. Costa Rica Topping the Group of Death 2014

One shocking result wasn't enough for Costa Rica in the 2014 group stage.

When Costa Rica was drawn into the "Group of Death" alongside England, Italy, and Uruguay—everyone expected them to finish dead last with zero points.

Instead, they beat Uruguay 3-1, then pulled off a spectacular 1-0 upset over Italy thanks to a Bryan Ruiz header. They topped the group unbeaten, sending both Italy and England home early.

6. Algeria 2-1 West Germany 1982

West Germany arrived in Spain as the reigning European champions and overwhelming favorites, with their players openly mocking Algeria before the match.

One German player even said he would play with a cigar in his mouth. Algeria made them pay for their arrogance, playing fast-paced football to secure a 2-1 victory, becoming the first African team to ever defeat a European side at the World Cup.

West Germany definitely learned their lesson from underestimating their opposition.

5. Cameroon 1-0 Argentina 1990

Diego Maradona led defending champions Argentina into the opening game of Italia '90 expecting an absolute walkover.

What they got was a physical masterclass from Cameroon. Even after having two players sent off, Cameroon stunned the world when Francois Omam-Biyik’s towering header slipped through the goalkeeper's hands.

Cameroon rode that wave all the way to the quarter-finals.

4. North Korea 1-0 Italy 1966

The Italian squad of 1966 was full of professional superstars from Serie A. The North Korean squad was made up of part-timers, including mechanics and dentists. But that didn't stop a once in a lifetime shock at Ayresome Park in Middlesbrough.

Pak Doo-ik struck a legendary first-half goal to eliminate the Italians. The Azzurri were so embarrassed that they secretly flew back into Italy under the cover of darkness to avoid rioting fans—who still pelted them with rotten tomatoes.

3. Senegal 1-0 France 2002

France arrived in South Korea and Japan in 2002 on top of the world. They were the reigning World Cup and European champions, with top scorers from the Premier League, Serie A, and Ligue 1 in their squad.

Senegal, meanwhile, were making their very first appearance at a World Cup finals. Papa Bouba Diop scrambled the ball into the net on the 30-minute mark, and the debutants shocked the globe.

This was the start of the curse seeing all the World Cup holders crash and burn the tournament after.

2. Saudi Arabia 2-1 Argentina

Before Lionel Messi lifted the trophy in Qatar, Argentina’s road to the trophy started off with one of the most shocking defeats in the modern era.

Coming into the tournament on a 36-match unbeaten run, Argentina took an early lead. But a five-minute spell in the second half saw Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari score two of the most famous goals in Arab football history.

The Saudi defense held on for a 2-1 win, creating a national holiday till this day.

1. USA 1-0 England 1950

You cannot talk about World Cup shocks without going back to 1950 in Brazil. England has always been seen as the big brother when it came to football.

The United States squad was a ragtag group of part-time players, including a hearse driver, a postman, and a dishwasher. In the "Miracle on Grass," a diving header from Joe Gaetjens gave the Americans a 1-0 lead.

The result was so unthinkable that when the score reached the newspapers back in England, editors assumed it was a typing error and initially printed that England had won 10-1!
