Jamie Carragher praised Harry Maguire for ensuring Manchester United avoided defeat against Leeds United in their 1-1 draw at Elland Road on 18 October.

Bryan Mbeumo had given United the lead before Leeds levelled early in the second half and pressed for a winner.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher called the draw a decent result in isolation but said United needed victories, making the dropped points frustrating.

What Carragher Said About Maguire’s Second Half

Carragher praised Maguire’s second-half performance after Leeds equalised. “I thought Harry Maguire was fantastic, especially in the second half."

He said United had looked close to losing their shape after Leeds levelled, but Maguire’s defending helped them stay in the game. Carragher added that few teams could expect more than a point away to Leeds, naming Manchester City and Arsenal as exceptions.

United had taken the lead in the 35th minute when Mbeumo finished Youri Tielemans’ cross. Lisandro Martínez went off injured at half-time and was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui, who moved into central defence.

Leeds equalised about six minutes after the restart, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin finishing after a corner was headed down to him. Poor defending from Carrick's men allowed their rivals to draw themselves level and they were put under the cosh several times before both sides settled on a point.

How Maguire’s Verdict Compares With the Match Data

Maguire offered a more measured assessment in his post-match interview with Sky Sports:

“You can’t question the togetherness, the spirit, the fight,” he said.

Maguire added that United felt comfortable playing in Carrick’s new system and argued that Leeds had created few chances. However, he acknowledged that United could not afford to concede from set pieces at grounds like Elland Road.

The match statistics show Leeds carried a greater attacking threat despite United having one more shot. Leeds registered five shots on target to United’s three and had 21 touches in the opposition penalty area, compared with 12 for the visitors.

Their expected-goals figure was 1.44, against United’s 0.91, according to NBC’s match data.

Carragher’s praise focused on Maguire’s defending after Leeds equalised. The match figures underline the attacking pressure Leeds created, while Carragher’s assessment highlights Maguire’s role in helping United withstand it.

Leeds started the match three points above United in the league table, with United having won just one league game this season. Carrick described the draw afterwards as a fresh start but stressed that the team was not treating the result as proof that everything was fine.

United’s next fixture is against Como in the Champions League on 21 October.
