As the UEFA Champions League league phase progresses, disciplinary records could become an increasingly important factor for clubs competing for a place in the knockout rounds.
Five players have already picked up two yellow cards across the opening two rounds, putting them among those to watch as the competition moves into its third round of fixtures.
With the league phase featuring eight matches for each team, accumulated bookings could play a significant role in determining which players are available for crucial European games. UEFA's updated disciplinary regulations also mean the threshold for an automatic suspension has changed for the 2026-27 season.
How many yellow cards lead to a Champions League suspension?
Under Article 63 of UEFA's Champions League regulations, players and team officials receive a one-match suspension after collecting four yellow cards that have not resulted in a red card.
The threshold has increased from three yellow cards, which was the rule in previous seasons. The change applies from the first match of the league phase, giving players a greater margin before an automatic suspension is triggered.
Further one-match suspensions follow after the sixth, eighth and subsequent even-numbered cautions. This means players who continue to collect bookings can face repeated bans as the competition progresses.
Yellow cards are carried forward between rounds, so a booking in the league phase can still contribute towards a suspension during the knockout stages.
However, all accumulated yellow cards expire after the quarter-finals and are not carried into the semi-finals. A suspension already triggered by accumulated bookings must still be served.
Red cards are treated separately. Players sent off are generally suspended for their next UEFA club competition match, although UEFA's disciplinary bodies can impose further sanctions for serious offences.
The same accumulated-yellow-card rules apply in the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League.

Five Champions League players at risk of suspension
Five players received two yellow cards across the opening two rounds of the league phase, leaving them two cautions away from an automatic one-match ban.
The players are:
- Armando Obispo - PSV Eindhoven
- Hakan Calhanoglu - Inter
- Jan Virgili - Club Brugge
- Marlon Gomes - Shakhtar Donetsk
- Sergino Dest - PSV Eindhoven
Each player will need to avoid collecting two further yellow cards before reaching the four-booking threshold.
For clubs competing across a demanding European schedule, suspensions can prove costly, particularly when key players are unavailable for important fixtures.
Discipline could become increasingly significant as the league phase progresses and teams begin fighting for qualification and favourable knockout positions.
Despite the higher threshold introduced this season, further bookings could still leave key players unavailable for crucial European fixtures.
