Chelsea Women head to Spain tonight knowing they are just 90 minutes away from securing their place in the league phase of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The Blues take a 5-2 advantage into the second leg against Real Sociedad after a dramatic first meeting at Plough Lane last week, where Sonia Bompastor’s side had to come from behind before eventually pulling away late on.
Now, Chelsea need to complete the job in San Sebastián.
A Three-Goal Cushion
Chelsea's first-leg victory was more complicated than the final score suggested.
Real Sociedad made a confident start and took the lead through Ainhoa Marín, before Chelsea eventually settled into the contest.
Naomi Girma levelled the game before Buurman put the Blues ahead after the break. Sociedad responded again through Cecilia Marcos, but Chelsea's attacking quality ultimately proved decisive.
James restored the advantage before Malard struck twice late on to give Chelsea a three-goal cushion.
That means Real Sociedad now need to score at least three times in San Sebastián just to force the tie level.
Chelsea, meanwhile, can afford to be more controlled.
Sociedad Facing An Uphill Battle
The situation has become even more difficult for Real Sociedad since the first leg.
Head coach Arturo Ruiz left the club to join Brighton & Hove Albion just five days after the defeat to Chelsea.
Things then got worse on the pitch, with Sociedad beginning their Liga F campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Logroño.
They will also be without María Molina, Aiara Agirrezabala and Sonya Keefe through injury, while goalkeeper Alazne Estensoro is away with Spain's Under-20 side.
For a team already needing to overturn a three-goal deficit, it is a challenging situation.
Chelsea's Chance To Make A Statement
For Chelsea, this is about more than simply progressing.
The club missed out on the Women's Champions League final last season after finishing third in the Women's Super League, meaning they have had to navigate qualifying to reach this season's league phase.
Winning this tie would put them back among Europe's leading clubs and give Bompastor another opportunity to test her squad against the continent's best.
Chelsea have also started the campaign with a perfect record, winning both of their pre-season fixtures before the 5-2 victory over Sociedad.
The first leg showed there is still work to do defensively, but it also demonstrated the attacking depth available to Bompastor.
Malard's two-goal debut was particularly encouraging, while James remains one of the players capable of changing a game in an instant.
Team News
Chelsea will be without Erin Cuthbert, Mayra Ramírez and Manaka Matsukubo, who remain sidelined through injury.
Defender Natalie Björn is also unavailable after picking up a new injury.
Chelsea have named a 21-player travelling squad for the second leg, including Lucy Bronze, Katie McCabe, Lauren James, Naomi Girma, Aggie Beever-Jones, Maika Hamano and Alyssa Thompson.

Real Sociedad's injury list is also set to make their task even harder, with Molina, Agirrezabala and Keefe unavailable.
How To Watch
The second leg takes place on Wednesday, September 2, with kick-off at 6pm BST at the Estadio Zubieta in San Sebastián.
There is no live television coverage in the UK, but Chelsea are streaming the match for free through their official website and app.

What Happens Next?
If Chelsea hold onto their advantage, they will book their place in the 2026/27 UEFA Women's Champions League league phase.
The league-phase draw is scheduled for September 4 in Nyon, with the first matches taking place on September 22 and 23.
That would give Chelsea the chance to test themselves against some of the biggest clubs in European women's football once again.
For now, though, the message is simple.
Finish the job.
