One day after Christian Eriksen's collapse, there was encouraging news. The Denmark midfielder was in good spirits and recovering in the hospital.

Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen issued a fresh update on Monday morning, confirming Eriksen is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon. For those closest to Eriksen, it was an encouraging sign after an anxious 24 hours.

"I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well," Boesen said. "He is with his family and is in good spirits. The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home."

Eriksen Expected To Leave Hospital After Second On-Pitch Collapse

Christian Eriksen in action for Denmark during the international friendly against Ukraine

For the second time in his career, Eriksen collapsed on the field during an international fixture, this time during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine in Odense on June 7, 2026.

His ICD device functioned as intended, allowing medical staff to stabilize the situation quickly, and he walked off the pitch unaided. He was then transported to Odense University Hospital for further examination.

By Monday, Boesen confirmed the federation is staying close to everyone involved. "We are taking good care of the players and staff and remain in regular contact with them," he said.

The same doctor was pitchside during Eriksen's cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 five years ago. His latest update offered a reassuring perspective from someone who has closely followed the midfielder's recovery journey.

What The Incident Could Mean For Eriksen's Future

Despite the positive update, there are still doubts about Eriksen’s career. It’s still unclear how the latest scare will affect his future or whether the 34-year-old will consider retirement.

Eriksen is currently under contract with Wolfsburg in Germany until the end of the 2026-27 season. Denmark, meanwhile, did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Since breaking into the Denmark senior team in 2010, Eriksen has scored 46 goals and been central to their midfield across multiple World Cups and European Championships. A retirement would mark the end of one of modern football’s most remarkable international careers.

What Young Players Should Take From Eriksen's Collapse Against Ukraine

Denmark manager Brian Riemer admitted the incident caught everyone off guard. "A few minutes before he fell ill, he had had a tussle with Ruslan Malinovskyi and I thought that was why he looked so distressed, but I was wrong," Riemer said.

"From that moment on, neither the players on the pitch nor I could have carried on with the match." The game was abandoned. It was the right call.

CRY said the incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of undiagnosed heart conditions in young athletes, and renewed their call for mandatory cardiac screening across youth football.

What Happened to Eriksen at Euro 2020?

He suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 and was resuscitated on the pitch. He later returned with an ICD device, becoming the first player to compete at the highest level with it. He went on to score at Euro 2024 and feature at a World Cup.

Few would have questioned him if he had stopped, but he didn’t. For every young player who has ever faced a wall and wondered whether to keep pushing, Eriksen's story answers that question without saying a word.

Football will wait for whatever he decides next.
