The saga involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal coach Jorge Jesus continues to unfold, with just under half of the international window remaining.

The 41-year-old was absent for a third training session with the national team, choosing to take off on his own, rather than join his teammates ahead of facing Denmark in Copenhagen.

His behaviour is not unconnected to the decision of veteran tactician Jesus to leave him as an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Norway earlier this week.

The latest update comes after Portuguese FA president Pedro Proença was reportedly spotted in the national team camp as he tried to broker peace between the legendary forward and coach.

Reports claim that Ronaldo is set to announce his international retirement. Talk in Portugal suggests that he has played his last game for his country.

Cristiano Ronaldo Releases Statement As He Leaves National Team Camp

Al-Nassr and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed his decision to leave the national team camp with immediate effect.

This information was contained in a statement that he released via his social media page, where he insinuated that a lot went on behind the scenes, leading to his decision.

He pointed out that he decided to leave after meeting with president Proença and listening to Jorge Jesus speak at his pre-match press conference.

"After the National Team Coach's press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I made the decision to leave the National Team camp.

In due time, I will tell the truth to all Portuguese people about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself.

Now is the time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates, without exception," he wrote.

Reports emerged on Wednesday that he had decided against joining the rest of the team for their training session at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

He opted to leave the stadium entirely, going on his own in the national team van while training continued in his absence.

This came after he was reported to have missed trainings in the days following the win over Norway, preferring instead to work out by himself in the indoor gym.

How Did Ronaldo-Jesus Get Here?

Tensions between Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portugal coach were brewing after the Al-Nassr man was left in the bench for the game in Oslo on Sunday.

It was the first time since 2008 that he had been an unused substitute for the Seleçao in a game, and he did not take too kindly to the coach's decision.

He stormed down the tunnel immediately the final whistle was blown, and did not wait behind to celebrate with his teammates or acknowledge the fans.

When asked after the game, Jesus revealed that he had intended for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner to come into the game in the second half, but the contest was too tight for him to be introduced.

This was the genesis of the strife between the veteran player and his veteran coach, under whom he won his first major honour with Al-Nassr last season.

Ronaldo boycotted training since, leading FA president Pedro Proença to travel to Denmark to try to rectify the situation.

In his press conference before the game, Jesus denied there being any problems between himself and his captain, but restated that he would pick who he wants to start games.

"There was no incident whatsoever.

Any player - and I was a player myself - when you spend 20 or 30 minutes warming up and then don't get on, no-one is happy about that. Afterwards, as coach, I decided not to bring him on. It's nothing to make a fuss about.

If I need [Ronaldo], he'll come on. If I don't need him, he won't," he said in response to questions from reporters (via BBC Football).

Cristiano Ronaldo did not appear to take too kindly to the comments of the 72-year-old coach, leading him to leave the camp.

He will not be part of the team that will take on Denmark or Norway in their final pair of games in this international window, and has headed back to his base.
