Everton have been stripped of their striker depth and are currently relying on Thierno Barry after selling Beto to Fiorentina on deadline day. With a need for at least one more striker, they have reportedly been offered former Manchester United striker Anthony Martial, per talkSPORT.
Martial open to a Premier League return
After spending just shy of a decade at Manchester United, Martial left the Red Devils two years ago to sign for Greek side AEK Athens. However, after a failed spell in the Mediterranean, the Frenchman decided to move to Monterrey in Mexico.
After one goal in his 20 appearances and a dislocated shoulder, Martial became a free agent, and for the first time in his professional career, nobody came calling. The once highly talented and promising youngster failed to live up to the hype in Manchester has now resorted to asking clubs for a move.
Everton in desperate need of another striker
With just Barry up front for Everton, the Toffees are in desperate need of at least one more striker after a dramatic deadline-day move for USA international Florian Balogun fell through.
Late moves for Joshua Zirkzee and Tammy Abraham were both rejected, which now forces David Moyes to either delve into the free-agent market, trust in academy players, or pray that Barry stays fit.
With Everton needing a reliable striker to pair with Barry, questions have been raised over Martial's ability and fitness. The veteran striker hasn't netted double-digit goals in a season since the 2019/20 season, in which the Frenchman scored 23 goals and collected nine assists.
The now 30-year-old has played 20 games or more in just two of his previous seven seasons across the Premier League, Super League 1 and Liga MX. During Monterrey's 1-0 win over Leon on 15th February, Martial was forced off via a stretcher after dislocating his shoulder on the brink of half-time.
Since then, he has played just 60 minutes of competitive football, which came in the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16.
David Moyes speaks out on Everton's transfer window
The former Manchester United manager voiced his feelings as the transfer window slammed shut "[I am] disappointed we didn't do more business and disappointed things didn't go our way in the end. I know what I needed and I know what it's like to build a squad for the Premier League".
For Moyes, a promising player is clearly the ideal target after he went after Balogun, Zirkzee, and Abraham, however, now that the window has shut, the Scot may need to sign the best player available instead of the best target. Martial would bring Premier League experience, a body to add to the depth and can get Everton through until January where the Toffees can focus on a long-term solution.
