Former Arsenal midfielder Jorginho is reportedly facing an anti-doping investigation after an alleged adverse finding in a CONMEBOL test while playing for Flamengo.

The claim was first made by Brazilian journalist Thiago Asmar, who reported that a counter-analysis has been scheduled for 27 October. No anti-doping violation, banned substance or suspension has been officially confirmed.

What Has Been Reported About Jorginho's Test

Thiago Asmar reported on 23 October that Flamengo midfielder Jorginho had returned an adverse result in a CONMEBOL anti-doping test.

Asmar said an analysis of the B sample was scheduled for 27 October, with a possible suspension of six months to two years if an anti-doping violation were established.

The substance allegedly detected has not been disclosed, and the date of the original sample collection remains unclear. Reports by iG Esportes and TyC Sports have also attributed the allegation to Asmar rather than to an official announcement from CONMEBOL.

Jorginho joined Flamengo in 2025 after previous spells with Napoli, Chelsea, and Arsenal. The 34-year-old remains a prominent figure in Brazil, which explains the attention the report has received beyond South America.

Flamengo And CONMEBOL Have Not Confirmed A Violation

Flamengo said it had not received any formal notification concerning Jorginho. Radio Globo journalist Renan Moura reported that the club said the midfielder had played against Estudiantes without any issues and was unaware that a second analysis had been scheduled.

“All and any doping control processes are subject to total internal confidentiality,” a CONMEBOL representative told Moura. “As such, it is not possible to confirm whether a player, whoever it may be, is under investigation or not.”

Reports have differed over when the alleged sample was collected. Some accounts linked it to Flamengo’s Copa Libertadores semi-final against Estudiantes, but iG Esportes reported that the test was not from that match.

Flamengo were knocked out of the competition on 22 October after a 0-0 draw with Estudiantes and a 3-2 defeat on penalties. Jorginho played in the second leg but missed his penalty in the shootout. There is, however, no confirmed evidence linking that match to the alleged anti-doping case.

What the Counter-Analysis Could Decide

The next reported step is an analysis of the B sample to see whether it confirms the result of the initial test.

An adverse analytical finding does not automatically mean an athlete has committed an anti-doping violation. The outcome depends on the test results and the applicable anti-doping rules, and the athlete is also entitled to respond to the finding.

Brazilian reports have suggested that Jorginho could face a suspension of six months to two years if an anti-doping violation is established. For now, Jorginho remains eligible to play for Flamengo.

The reported counter-analysis, scheduled for 27 October, is the next key step in determining whether the initial finding is confirmed. Neither Flamengo nor CONMEBOL has officially confirmed an anti-doping violation.
