Arsenal are closing in on the signing of England international Georgia Stanway following the expiration of her contract at Bayern Munich, in what could become one of the most significant moves of the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old midfielder is expected to join the Champions League winners on a free transfer in July, subject to a medical.

The move would bring one of Europe’s most complete midfielders back to England after four successful years in Germany, where Stanway helped Bayern secure four Frauen Bundesliga titles and further establish herself as one of the world’s elite central midfielders.

Georgia Stanway Fits Arsenal’s Midfield Rebuild

Stanway’s arrival appears to be part of Arsenal’s wider rebuild under Renee Slegers following their European success.

With several departures already confirmed this summer, including Victoria Pelova, Arsenal are entering a new phase in midfield.

The club have long admired Stanway and reportedly identified her as a target well before their Champions League triumph. Her profile fits exactly what Arsenal have lacked at times domestically, intensity, leadership, defensive aggression and the ability to dictate transitions in high-pressure matches.

Unlike a traditional holding midfielder or a purely creative No.10, Stanway offers balance. She can progress play, win duels, press aggressively and contribute to scoring goals, making her one of the most versatile midfielders in Europe.

Stanway Returns to the WSL as a More Complete Midfielder

The 27-year-old left Manchester City in 2022 searching for a new challenge, and her move to Bayern Munich appears to have elevated her game significantly.

In Germany, she developed into a more tactically disciplined midfielder while maintaining the directness and energy that made her stand out in the Women’s Super League.

Her experience in title-winning environments and deep Champions League runs could prove invaluable for Arsenal as they attempt to reclaim the WSL title for the first time since 2019.

The England international has also become one of the Lionesses’ most important players under Sarina Wiegman, helping England win consecutive European Championships and reach the 2023 World Cup final.

Arsenal’s Summer Rebuild Is Beginning to Take Shape

The midfielder may not be the only major addition arriving in North London this summer. The club are also reportedly close to signing Switzerland international Geraldine Reuteler following her departure from Eintracht Frankfurt. The attacking midfielder enjoyed an impressive season in Germany, contributing goals and assists while starring at last summer’s European Championship.

Combined with Stanway’s expected arrival, Arsenal appear to be building a squad capable of competing consistently on both domestic and European fronts.

If completed, Stanway’s move could become one of the defining transfers of the WSL summer window, not just because of her quality, but because of what it says about Arsenal’s ambitions moving forward.
