Harry Kane has explained how his role at Bayern Munich has allowed him to showcase more of his creative qualities alongside his established goalscoring ability.

The England captain has built his career around an exceptional goalscoring record, but his role at Bayern has allowed him to showcase more of his passing range, vision and understanding of the game.

In an interview published on UEFA’s official website, Kane reflected on how his responsibilities have changed since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, explaining why he enjoys having more opportunities to get involved in build-up play while continuing to lead the line.

How Bayern Munich has expanded Harry Kane's role

Kane believes the creative side of his game has become more prominent during his time in Germany, allowing him to combine his natural finishing ability with a greater influence on Bayern’s attacking play.

The striker explained that his footballing identity was not always limited to playing as a conventional centre-forward.

"In my youth team days, I was always more of a midfielder/striker. I liked to play in different positions," Kane said in the interview.

He explained that his role became more focused on leading the attack after breaking into Tottenham’s first team, where he was primarily viewed as a number nine.

However, Kane believes the technical qualities he developed earlier in his career have always been there.

"But I feel like I’ve always had the passing range, the vision, and the football brain — the game understanding throughout my whole career, and I think that’s just flourished these last couple of years especially, these last few years since I’ve been here at Bayern."

The freedom to drop deeper, link play and create opportunities for teammates has become an important part of his game in Munich.

Rather than simply waiting for chances inside the penalty area, Kane can help Bayern progress the ball, bring other attackers into play and create space for teammates to exploit.

That versatility makes him more than a conventional goalscorer, even though finding the net remains central to his role.

Why Harry Kane values his creative freedom at Bayern

Despite his growing creative influence, Kane recognises that goals will always be the primary measure of his performances.

His record since joining Bayern underlines why expectations remain so high. According to the figures cited in the original report, he had scored 155 goals and provided 37 assists in 157 appearances across all competitions at the time of publication.

Those numbers demonstrate his extraordinary productivity, but Kane believes he can offer even more when he is allowed to become involved in different phases of an attack.

"Right now, there’s a lot of freedom for me to get on the ball and make an impact, and also be the one to score the goals," he explained.

"I know I’m going to be judged on goalscoring first and foremost, but I feel like I can have much more of an impact on the game when I’m able to touch the ball more, play, and move and create space for other people."

It is a role that suits a player capable of both finishing moves and creating them.

Kane’s passing range allows him to find teammates in advanced positions, while his movement can draw defenders away from dangerous areas and open opportunities for Bayern’s other attackers.

His ability to contribute in these ways also gives Bayern another route to goal when opponents concentrate on limiting his opportunities in the box.

Since arriving from Tottenham, Kane has continued to produce goals at an exceptional rate while demonstrating the wider qualities that have long made him one of Europe's most complete forwards.

For the England captain, the balance is clear: goals remain essential, but having the freedom to influence the game in more ways makes him a more effective player.
