It's a massive injury blow for Timber after the young defender enjoyed a strong campaign with Arsenal as he'll now miss out on this summer's tournament with the Dutch national team

Football can be cruel. Jurrien Timber is feeling the full force of cruel luck as the Arsenal defender has been officially ruled out of this summer's World Cup with the Dutch national team.

A persistent groin injury that he's been dealing with since the middle of March when he initially sustained the problem in a Premier League match against Everton. He had also been dealing with an ankle injury earlier in the season, but the groin problem is the proverbial nail in the coffin for his World Cup hopes.

KNVB Confirm Jurrien Timber's World Cup Withdrawal

"The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner. In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team's pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan," the Dutch Football Federation said in a post on Monday, confirming Timber's fate (via ESPN).

The defender will leave the Netherlands' training camp in Kanas City, Missouri after the friendly against Uzbekistan and it's been confirmed that Timber's place in the Dutch squad is going to be taken by Sunderland's Lutsharel Geertuida.

How Injury Derailed Timber's World Cup Dream

Timber had been doing everything in his power to be fit for the Champions League final in Budapest against Paris Saint-Germain and was able to clock 54 minutes in the losing effort, having come off the bench in the 66th minute to replace Cristhian Mosquera.

Despite a valiant effort at the Puskas Arena, it's too little too soon for the 24-year-old with regard to his involvement at the World Cup and he'll have to turn his efforts to getting fully fit and prepping for the 2026/27 campaign with Arsenal.

Timber finished the 2025/26 campaign with a total of 44 appearances across all competitions, having added 4 goals and 7 assists on the way to the Premier League title and run to the Champions League final.

Ronald Koeman Explains The Decision To Replace Timber

Dutch manager Ronald Koeman admitted he felt the Timber decision was coming with his persistent groin problem. As much as he didn't want to lose the Arsenal man ahead of the World Cup, it was always a possibility.

"Over the last couple of days, we'd already had the feeling that this would be the decision. In the end, we sat down with Jurrien late last night and again this morning, and unfortunately we had to make this decision," Koeman told Dutch outlet NOS.

"With Jurrien in the squad, we have eight defenders; without him, there are seven, and that's not enough. So you have to make a decision. We had Geertruida with the squad right up until the match against Algeria, so it wouldn't be too much of a struggle to bring him in. We didn't wait any longer because his situation wasn't expected to improve any time soon," Koeman added.
