Cristian Romero is reportedly the leading candidate to become Argentina's next captain following Lionel Messi's retirement from international football. The Argentine Football Association has yet to confirm the appointment.

The Atletico Madrid defender was previously third in the captaincy order behind Messi and Nicolas Otamendi and has worn the armband at least twice when Messi was unavailable. Messi's retirement from international football on 31 August left Argentina without a captain.

The 21-year national team career ended with his decision, which he confirmed in an Instagram post, saying the moment "hurts me a lot" after considering it since Argentina's 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final.
