Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has revealed he has not been offered a new contract at the club, with the 27-year-old still on the five-year deal he signed in 2023, which runs until 2028.

The Argentine international’s unhappiness appears to stem from fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch agreeing to new long-term contracts with the club this year.

Mac Allister revealed ahead of the Reds' opening Champions League match against Atletico Madrid that “the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract”, which he admitted made him “very, very sad”.

Despite reaffirming his short-term commitment to the club, the Liverpool No.10 also revealed that “there was a chance [he could have left in the summer]”, leaving many to question whether the midfielder’s future lies elsewhere or if contract talks can be revived under new boss Andoni Iraola.

Mac Allister's Own Admission And Honest Opinions

In a pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s first Champions League match of the league phase against Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister did not hold back as he spoke to the media about the club’s reluctance to renew his current deal.

Clearly disappointed, the midfielder said: “As everyone knows, I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad.

“Everyone can see I give my 100 per cent for this football club, every single day in training and games. Of course I can have very good games, very bad games like everyone. I always give my best.

“And I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts, and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine.”

After a rather damning and solemn admission, the former Premier League-winning midfielder reassured fans that his commitment and effort for the team would not subside, while also addressing whether contract talks could still take place.

“Maybe. I don’t know. It’s going to depend on how I perform during this year. They are right to make the decision as well, but hopefully they change their minds.

“We will see what happens. There were options to leave this summer, and I think right now I’m in the right club and I have the mindset to give my 100 per cent for this club.”

Is Mac Allister Still in Iraola’s Plans?

Despite the ongoing issues, it still seems likely that the two parties can reach a favourable solution, especially considering Mac Allister’s love for the Merseyside club, as well as some telling comments from relatively new boss Andoni Iraola.

Aligning with his own admission, Manchester City were linked with the midfielder this summer, but Mac Allister also explained why he chose not to leave during the press conference, expressing that “this is the right club. I love being here, I love the fans, and this is something special.”

Turning to Iraola, the Liverpool head coach has started Mac Allister in the Reds’ last two Premier League games against Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town, contributing to their unbeaten start. Iraola also admitted during the Champions League presser that the midfielder “played really well on Friday [against Ipswich].”

Later in the press conference, Iraola described Mac Allister as an “important”, “very experienced and intelligent” player, suggesting the situation could be resolved, saying: “We all have personal situations with different contracts.

“The important thing is he wants to be here and continue here. I rate him very highly, [and there] definitely is still a lot of time to talk.”

In his three-year spell at the club so far, the Argentine has won the Premier League title and Carabao Cup, although fans have suggested his performances dipped last season.

However, Mac Allister impressed during Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final and has started Liverpool’s own campaign this season with renewed energy. The question now is what it will take to secure a new deal, or whether the 27-year-old’s future could eventually lie elsewhere.
