Manchester United fear Benjamin Sesko could be out for up to four months after suffering another injury setback, according to The Sun. The striker has undergone checks at Carrington, with sources close to him hoping he can return before February.
Sesko has not played since United’s 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton on 16 September and has now been out for about five weeks. Michael Carrick has yet to give a return date but expects to provide a clearer update by the end of the week.
Earlier this month, Carrick said Sesko was further from a return than expected and would miss the Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur. He also clarified that the latest problem affected a similar area to last season’s injury, but was not the same issue.
Sesko’s Shin Injury: How it Has Developed Since May
Sesko’s shin problem flared up during United’s 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford on 3 May. He scored his 11th league goal of the season before being pushed into the advertising hoardings; since he could not continue playing, he was replaced at half-time.
Carrick said the impact aggravated a shin problem the striker had already been carrying.
Sesko missed United’s final three league games and the entire pre-season campaign. He returned as a substitute against Hull City on 22 August, then scored in the 2-2 draw with Everton and the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah FK.
The problem resurfaced after the 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton on 16 September. Sesko subsequently missed the league game against Fulham, and United confirmed he had withdrawn from Slovenia’s squad for the international break to undergo further tests.
Who can Replace Sesko in United’s Attack?
Sesko has scored twice in six appearances this season after finishing his debut campaign with 12 goals in all competitions. United signed him from RB Leipzig for £73.7 million in August 2025.
Matheus Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee are the other options available to Michael Carrick, although neither provides a like-for-like replacement for Sesko. United could also consider signing another striker in January, with The Sun reporting that the club may revisit the position after his latest injury setback.
United host Bournemouth in the Premier League on 25 October, with Sesko’s absence likely to affect Carrick’s options up front.
