Luis de la Fuente has built a super-team with Spain, and they do not look like stopping anytime soon, after a historic win over Croatia in the UEFA Nations League.

La Roja have shown remarkable consistency across major tournaments and friendly games, and are now unbeaten across their last 40 games.

They completed the achievement on home soil with a 4-1 win against Croatia, extending their record unbeaten run to 40 games.

The world champions became the first national team to go 40 consecutive matches unbeaten, setting a new international record.

How Did Spain Build Their Record 40-Game Unbeaten Run?

Spanish football enjoyed a golden period in the late 2000s and early 2010s, when the men's national team won Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and Euro 2012 in style.

Between 2007 and 2009, they went 35 games unbeaten, a record at the time.

Following this period, there was a lull, as they began to struggle in multiple tournaments and soon lost their status as the team to beat in world football.

De la Fuente's appointment in 2022, following Spain's elimination from the 2022 World Cup, marked the beginning of a successful new era for the national team.

La Roja have not lost since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Colombia in March 2024, extending their unbeaten run to 40 games. They have won 31 and drawn nine of those 40 matches.

The game that kicked off the run was a 3-3 draw against Brazil in a friendly on March 26, 2024.

Since then, they have won Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup. In competitive matches, their last defeat came in March 2023, when Scotland beat them 2-0 in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

In the all-time international unbeaten-run list, Italy's 37-match streak and Argentina's 36-match run now sit behind Spain's record.

De la Fuente's team has won the UEFA Nations League in 2023, Euro 2024 and the FIFA World Cup in 2026 during his tenure.

He remains the only coach in history to have won all three available titles, and he signed a new contract this summer to continue to lead the national team.

How Did Spain Beat Croatia 4-1 to Extend Their Unbeaten Run?

Spain opened their UEFA Nations League Group A3 campaign with a 3-2 win over England last week, and quickly followed it up with a 4-1 triumph against Croatia in Seville.

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring inside two minutes before Dion Drena Beljo equalised for Croatia in the 28th minute.

Atletico Madrid defender Marc Pubill restored La Roja's advantage three minutes later, heading in Yamal's cross for his first Spain goal.

amal scored again in the 63rd minute to put Spain 3-1 ahead, before Nico Williams came off the bench to complete the scoring in the 89th minute.

Beyond extending their unbeaten run to 40 games, Spain also reached 70 goals in UEFA Nations League history, making them the competition's all-time top scorers.

They will face Czechia and Croatia in their remaining two Nations League games in this window.
