Former Aston Villa and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been linked with a coaching job at Championship club Wrexham.

According to talkSPORT, Gerrard is open to managerial vacancy at the Racecourse Ground if under-pressure Phil Parkinson is shown the exit door.

Wrexham currently find themselves in 17th position in the Championship table with just two wins after 10 games this season.

However, Parkinson is reported to still have some support from Wrexham board as the Reds prepare to host Preston North End on Saturday.

GERRARD AMONG WREXHAM OPTIONS

Gerrard who has been working as media consultant for TNT Sport this season, is reportedly a managerial option for Wrexham.

Gerrard’s last managerial appointment ended in January 2025 and he has been without a coaching job since he left Saudi Professional League club Al-Ettifaq.

The former Liverpool and England captain previously managed Premier League club  Aston Villa and Rangers where he won the Scottish Premiership League without losing a game in the 2020-21 season.

Former Burnley manager Scott Parker is another notable name reportedly interested in the Championship club.

Parker has been without a job since he was sacked by Burnley in April following the Clarets’ relegation from the Premier League.

PARKINSON REMAINS CALM UNDER PRESSURE

Meanwhile, Parkinson is positive as pressure heats up around his role as Wrexham manager.

The English coach who has been at the Racecourse Ground since 2021, compared the club’s current form with their performance last season after 10 games.

With 11 points from 10 matches this campaign, Wrexham are one point better off than they were last season after the same number of matches.

Parkinson believes his squad can overturn their woes and they can still better their seventh-place finish in the Championship last season.

“I think last year, people kind of stir up a bit of negativity, which is just part and parcel of being a manager," he said via talkSport during his press conference on Friday.

"We're just looking at the overall picture; we're one point ahead of where we were last year when we got ourselves going.

“We finished so close to the play-offs, and I'm very confident that we'll be able to achieve that again this season.

“We've just had a disrupted start, and of course when that happens criticism comes your way as a manager, it comes the players' way, and everybody is under the spotlight.

"But that's just the nature of football. I think everybody can see on the outside that we've got a decent squad.

"I'm confident for me and the staff and the players to batten down the hatches, to concentrate on what we've got to do at the weekend, to get ourselves up and running again and we'll have a strong season."

Wrexham gave away a one-goal lead on Tuesday to lose 2-1 against West Bromwich Albion, but they will be hoping to avoid such fate as they target their second home win of the season against Preston.
