Deadline day is always full of twists and turns with Sunderland now looking to seal a deal for youngster Malik Fofana from Lyon. Capitalising on Arsenal taking their time on whether to bring the winger in to replace Martinelli, the Black Cats made quick work of getting the deal done.
Why Arsenal Fell Through
According to reports from TEAMtalk and Fabrizio Romano, the sudden collapse of Fofana's move to North London boiled down to one single factor: money.
Arsenal had been tracking Fofana for some time and had even made initial enquiries. The player had reportedly given the green light to the move after holding talks with Mikel Arteta. However, Lyon's evaluation ultimately killed the transfer. The French club demanded a package worth €35m-€40m, which Arsenal point-blank refused to pay, viewing the demands as excessive.
With the Gunners unwilling to budge, Sunderland rapidly stepped in and successfully negotiated a verbally agreed fee of €30m plus add-ons, leaving Arsenal empty-handed.
The only issue is Crystal Palace have now come into the race and are reportedly working to hijack the Wearside outfit's deal. David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that Eagles boss Pierre Sage has spoken to Fofana to try and tempt him with a move to Selhurst Park.
The Sunderland Project
While Arsenal walked away over the fee, Sunderland’s ability to convince Fofana to choose the Stadium of Light shouldn't be ignored.
Under the guidance of Regis Le Bris, Sunderland are preparing for a grueling season that includes Europa League football. According to Ben Jacobs, Fofana is deeply excited by the ambition of the Sunderland project and the guarantee of significant playing time in European competition.

What Young Players Can Learn
Picking game time over the profile of the club when you're starting out your career has a proven track record of working. Like Gareth Bale choosing Tottenham over Manchester United or Carlos Tevez joining Manchester City to be the star.
A lot of the time, minutes can up your value tenfold, and having that middle ground move can earn you those reps to take you to the top level. Playing European football will get him that exposure and experience in one and Premier League defenders will have to be on their toes to stop this exciting new winger.
