Manchester United have spent heavily on players who became household names, but some of the club’s most influential signings arrived for modest fees. Eric Cantona cost £1.2 million from Leeds United in 1992, while Cristiano Ronaldo joined from Sporting CP for £12.24 million in 2003.

Both deals proved far more significant than their initial cost suggested, although their impact on the club took different forms.

This ranking focuses on players Manchester United signed from other clubs, with transfers assessed up to 2026. Academy graduates such as Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and David Beckham are excluded because they did not arrive as external signings.

The ranking considers each player’s sporting impact, honours, longevity, importance to the team, and value for money.

10. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joined Manchester United from Molde for £1.5 million in 1996 and scored 126 goals in 366 appearances. He was not always a first-choice starter, but his finishing and ability to deliver in crucial moments made him a valuable part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad.

His most famous contribution came in the 1999 Champions League final, when he scored the injury-time winner against Bayern Munich to complete United’s comeback and secure the treble.

9. Ruud van Nistelrooy

Ruud van Nistelrooy joined Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven in 2001 for £19 million and scored 150 goals in 219 appearances.

His prolific finishing made him one of the club’s most reliable goalscorers, with a scoring rate that stands out among United’s major signings. He left in 2006, before the team’s Champions League-winning seasons of 2007–08 and 2008–09.

8. Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand joined Manchester United from Leeds United in 2002 for £29.1 million, then a British record fee for a defender, and made 455 appearances over 12 seasons.

He became a defensive mainstay alongside Nemanja Vidić, helping United reach consecutive Champions League finals in 2008 and 2009 and win the trophy in 2008.

7. Peter Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel cost Manchester United just £505,000 when he joined from Brøndby in 1991. He made 398 appearances and became one of the club’s most influential goalkeepers, known for his saves, command of the box and ability to launch attacks.

He was also a key part of the team that won the treble in 1999.

6. Roy Keane

Manchester United signed Roy Keane from Nottingham Forest for £3.75 million in 1993. He made 480 appearances, scored 51 goals and captained the club to the 1999 treble.

Keane set the pace in midfield, winning tackles, breaking up opposition attacks and pushing his teammates to maintain their intensity. His performance against Juventus in the 1999 Champions League semi-final showed his importance.

United were trailing 2-0 in Turin when Keane scored to start their comeback in a 3-2 win, despite knowing a booking would rule him out of the final.

5. Bryan Robson

Manchester United signed Bryan Robson from West Bromwich Albion for a British-record £1.5 million in October 1981. He made 465 appearances over 13 seasons. He captained United through a difficult transitional period.

Robson lifted three FA Cups and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991, giving United a leader who could drive the team forward.

4. Denis Law

Denis Law joined Manchester United from Torino in 1962 for a British-record fee of £115,000. He scored 171 goals in 309 league appearances and finished his United career with 237 goals in 404 games across all competitions.

Law was part of the side that won the European Cup in 1968, having already helped the club win the FA Cup in 1963 and league titles in 1965 and 1967.

3. Wayne Rooney

Manchester United signed Wayne Rooney from Everton for £25.6 million in 2004. He scored 253 goals in 559 appearances, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Rooney won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, three League Cups and the Europa League. He played as a striker, out wide, and in midfield. He remained influential through changes in managers, teammates, and playing styles.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 appearances during his first spell at Manchester United, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the 2008 Ballon d’Or.

Real Madrid paid £80 million for him in 2009, giving United a substantial return on their £12.24 million investment. He returned in 2021 and scored 27 goals in 54 appearances before leaving by mutual agreement in November 2022.

This ranking focuses on the impact of his original signing and first spell at Old Trafford.

1. Eric Cantona

Eric Cantona ranks first because his arrival helped Manchester United win the league again after 25 years without a title. Signed from Leeds United in November 1992, he scored 82 goals in 185 appearances and won four Premier League titles and two FA Cups before retiring in 1997.

United won the inaugural Premier League title in his first season, and Cantona’s creativity and confidence helped Ferguson build a team that would dominate English football for years.
