The North London derby rarely needs extra motivation, but this weekend’s meeting between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal Women carries a different significance for both sides.
Arsenal have become accustomed to setting the standard in this fixture, yet their difficult start to the Women’s Super League campaign has left them facing an unfamiliar challenge.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have shown they can trouble opponents in front of goal, although recent defensive struggles have raised questions of their own.
With both teams desperate for a response, Saturday’s clash could prove pivotal to their early-season ambitions. And while Arsenal’s historical dominance offers encouragement, the numbers suggest Renee Slegers’ side cannot afford to underestimate their neighbours.
Tottenham vs Arsenal Women: recent form and key stats
For the first time in Women’s Super League history, Tottenham are set to begin a North London derby above Arsenal in the league table.
That represents a significant shift in the balance between the rivals, particularly given Arsenal’s recent success in the competition.
However, Tottenham’s position comes despite their own difficult run, with Martin Ho’s side looking to recover from consecutive heavy defeats against London City Lionesses and Chelsea.
Spurs began the campaign unbeaten across their first four league matches, winning three and drawing one. Their attacking performances have been particularly encouraging, with only Manchester City scoring more than Tottenham’s 18 goals in the WSL this season.
Captain Drew Spence has been central to their efforts, and she could equal Millie Bright’s record of 216 appearances in the competition. Her experience will be important as Tottenham look to turn their attacking promise into a result against their biggest rivals.
However, their defensive record remains a concern. Tottenham have conceded 14 goals, with only Charlton Athletic having shipped more in the league. Tottenham have also conceded at least six goals in consecutive WSL matches, a rare occurrence previously recorded by Doncaster Rovers Belles in 2013.
Arsenal will hope to exploit those vulnerabilities, although their own attacking struggles make that far from straightforward.
Despite recording 121 shots this season, the third-highest total in the competition, the Gunners have a shot conversion rate of just 4.1%. They also rank third-lowest for shooting accuracy at 30.6% and average expected goals per shot at just 0.09.
Those numbers represent a considerable decline for a team that ranked among the WSL’s top two sides for shot conversion in each of the previous two campaigns.
Alessia Russo has particularly struggled to find her usual rhythm. The forward, who finished second in last season’s Golden Boot standings, has scored just once across six league matchdays.
Her recent performances have highlighted Arsenal’s lack of cutting edge, with Russo managing only two attempts against Birmingham City, neither of which tested the goalkeeper. She has also gone three consecutive WSL matches without registering a shot on target.
Nevertheless, her record against Tottenham offers a reason for optimism. Russo has scored eight league goals against Spurs, more than against any other opponent, making her a player the hosts will need to watch closely.
Slegers also has a strong record against English managers, remaining unbeaten in all 17 of her WSL matches against them, winning 11 and drawing six.
However, Arsenal’s wider form is becoming increasingly concerning. They are without a win in five consecutive WSL matches for the first time in their league history, recording three draws and two defeats. They have also drawn more English top-flight matches than any other side since the beginning of last season, with nine.
Saturday presents an opportunity to stop that slide, but Tottenham’s attacking threat means Arsenal will need to be more clinical in both penalty areas.
Tottenham vs Arsenal Women: head-to-head record and prediction
History still favours Arsenal heading into the derby. The Gunners have won 10 of their 13 WSL meetings with Tottenham, drawing two and losing just once.
Their recent victories have been particularly emphatic, scoring five goals in each of their last two wins against Spurs: a 5-0 victory in February 2025 and a 5-2 result in March 2026.
However, Tottenham have made the fixture increasingly competitive on home soil. They have lost only two of their last five WSL home meetings with Arsenal, winning one and drawing two. The corresponding fixture last season ended in a goalless draw, demonstrating that Spurs can frustrate their neighbours when they get their defensive organisation right.
Opta’s supercomputer favours Arsenal despite their recent struggles. In 10,000 simulations, Arsenal won 56.6% of outcomes, compared with 21.6% for Tottenham, while 21.8% ended in a draw.
Those probabilities make Arsenal favourites, but the contrasting attacking and defensive statistics suggest the contest could be closer than the standings might indicate. Tottenham have demonstrated their ability to score freely, while Arsenal’s difficulty converting chances could leave the door open for the hosts.
Tottenham vs Arsenal Women predicted line-ups
Tottenham Hotspur (4-3-3): Lize Kop; Julie Blakstad, Toko Koga, Amanda Nilden, Caitlin Dijkstra; Drew Spence, Signe Gaupset, Olivia Holdt; Victoria Pelova, Matilda Vinberg, Cathinka Tandberg

Striver’s prediction: Tottenham 1-1 Arsenal
Arsenal’s superior record in this fixture and their ability to create shooting opportunities make them difficult to overlook. If Russo and the Gunners’ other forwards can rediscover their finishing touch, the visitors have the quality to secure a much-needed victory.
Tottenham should still pose a threat, particularly if they can take advantage of Arsenal’s uncertainty and turn the contest into an open game. However, the Gunners may have enough quality to avoid defeat in a closely fought derby.
