Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is expected to be absent for several weeks after collapsing while watching the club's reserve team train.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said on 24 October that Kompany remained in hospital in a stable condition while doctors continued investigating the cause of his collapse.
The Bavarians have not set a return date, and assistant coach Aaron Danks will oversee the team during Kompany's absence.
Bayern Munich provide update on Vincent Kompany's condition
The Club announced on 23 October that Kompany had required medical attention after collapsing while watching the reserve team train. He was taken to hospital for further examinations, and the club said he would remain under medical care.
The reserve team's scheduled match was postponed following the incident.
At a press conference on 24 October, Eberl said he had spoken to Kompany, who would remain in hospital for several more days while doctors continued their examinations. Eberl said the club expected his absence to last weeks rather than days.
Bayern have not disclosed a diagnosis, and Eberl declined to speculate on whether Kompany's recent viral infection was connected to the collapse. As reported by Sports Illustrated, Eberl said: "He shouldn't come back until he's fit."
Vincent Kompany's illness before his collapse
Kompany had been unwell for about a week before collapsing at Bayern's training ground. He appeared subdued during the club's 6-1 win over RB Leipzig, with a viral infection reportedly affecting his movement and aggravating an old hip injury.
He missed training and the pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern's Champions League meeting with Arsenal on 21 October. Assistant coach Aaron Danks handled media duties in his place.
Kompany returned to the touchline for Bayern's 2-2 draw with Arsenal on 22 October despite having been unwell. He collapsed while watching the reserve team train on 23 October and was taken to hospital.
Journalists Philipp Kessler and Mano Bonke of the Munich newspaper tz reported further detail about the week leading up to it, as relayed by Bayern-focused account @iMiaSanMia. According to tz, Kompany had already spent a night in hospital earlier in the week, where tests found nothing abnormal.
They also reported that he led the first team’s session on the day of the collapse before moving on to watch the reserve team’s training. Bayern have not confirmed either detail.
The same report said Kompany is known internally at Bayern for sleeping little and working through much of the night.
Sporting director Max Eberl said the club would give him time to recover. Speaking about Bayern's responsibility to look after their coach, he said.
"The fact is, we protect our coach wherever we can."
Who will manage Bayern Munich during Kompany's absence?
Assistant coach Aaron Danks will take charge of Bayern Munich for Sunday's Bundesliga trip to SC Freiburg on 25 October. He previously worked with Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht before joining him at Bayern in July 2024.
Sporting director Max Eberl said Bayern had not considered postponing the Freiburg match. Danks and the rest of the coaching staff will oversee the team.
Bayern face Magdeburg in the DFB-Pokal on 28 October before hosting Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on 31 October. They then travel to Madrid to face Atletico in the Champions League on 3 November, followed by an away match against Mainz on 7 November.
Bayern are top of the Bundesliga with 14 points from six matches, level with Borussia Dortmund but ahead on goal difference.
