Matchday eight of the 2026 FIFA World Cup was an eventful one as a number of milestones were set following the commencement of the second round of fixtures across groups A and B.
The slate featured history-making hat-tricks, chaotic red cards, a shocking injury, and a teenage tournament record shattered.
Here is how a wild day unfolded across North America for Striver.Football.
Group A: El Tri Marches On, Bafana Bafana Breathe
Mexico 1-0 South Korea
Co-hosts Mexico became the first nation to book a ticket to the Round of 32 after beating South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara after a tense opening first half.
In the 50th minute, a costly defensive mix-up between South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu and center-back Kim Min-Jae left the ball loose.
Luis Romo pounced on the opportunity to slot it cleanly into the unguarded net. South Korea pushed aggressively late on, but Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel pulled off a spectacular save in the closing minutes to preserve the victory and send the home crowd into raptures.
Czechia 1-1 South Africa
South Africa kept their tournament hopes alive with a gutsy comeback in Atlanta.
After Michal Sadilek had put Czechia into the lead after just six minutes, Bafana Bafana fought back resolutely in the second half, earning a crucial point when midfield general Teboho Mokoena calmly dispatched a 75th-minute penalty following a handball in the box.
South Africa now have it all to play for in their last match against South Korea to stand a chance of making it to the round of 32.
Group B: Canada's Six-Goal Historic Storm, Swiss Late Blitz
Canada 6-0 Qatar
In Vancouver, the BC Place witnessed pure history as Canada secured its first-ever World Cup victory in spectacular fashion.
Jonathan David netted a brilliant hat-trick to lead the historic rout, supported by strikes from Cyle Larin and Noah Saliba.
The match completely turned on its head for Qatar, who lost their composure and saw both Homam Elamin and Assim Madibo sent off with straight red cards.
Regrettably, the joy of the historic triumph was significantly dampened by a horrific leg injury to Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone.
Switzerland 4-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina
A flat, cagey encounter at the Los Angeles Stadium erupted into life with an incredible five-goal flurry in the final 20 minutes.
Swiss teenager Johan Manzambi became the youngest substitute in World Cup history to score a brace off the bench, striking in the 74th and 90th minutes to break open the deadlock.
Ruben Vargas added a neat finish on an 84th-minute counter-attack before captain Granit Xhaka wrapped up the scoring from the penalty spot deep in stoppage time. Bosnia managed a consolation goal via Ermin Mahmic, but a Tarik Muharemovic red card sealed their fate.
