Chelsea have agreed a deal for former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso to become their next head coach.

The club have formally agreed a deal, according to The Athletic, and it is understood that the Spaniard will sign a four year contract.

Chelsea Reach Agreement With Xabi Alonso

Alonso will get increased power in comparison to former managers under the BlueCo led ownership, amid a period of self reflection upon the sacking of Liam Rosenior.

While the Blues suffered a painful defeat to Manchester City this afternoon in the FA Cup final, losing 1-0, the players and fans will be buoyed by this deal being struck.

Alonso Set to Receive Greater Influence at Chelsea

Callum McFarlane, the current interim head coach, deployed a back three formation, Alonso’s favoured system, in the previous two matches.

Chelsea have shown signs of stability within that formation, and it will now be interesting to see if Alonso decides to build on that.

Alonso was Chelsea’s top choice and the club have been tracking him since 2024. Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva were other names considered.
