Paris Saint-Germain called off the signing of Zion Suzuki just hours after a private jet had been sent to Parma to collect the goalkeeper for his medical in Paris.
Sources close to PSG confirmed that the deal had collapsed less than a week after the clubs reached a verbal agreement worth €35 million.
PSG's original plan involved signing Suzuki permanently and immediately loaning him to Juventus for the season. That arrangement fell apart earlier this week when Juventus, frustrated by the lack of confirmation from Paris, turned instead to Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario.
It is the second high-profile transfer PSG have abandoned over agent demands in as many weeks, leaving Parma to reassess the future of the 23-year-old Japanese international with only a few weeks left in the transfer window.
Zion Suzuki-PSG Transfer Collapses After Medical Was Planned
PSG and Parma reached a verbal agreement on a €35m package for the Japanese goalkeeper five days ago. By Saturday morning, the clubs were exchanging paperwork ahead of a medical in Paris, and a private jet had already been dispatched to Parma to fly the goalkeeper to France.
Fabrizio Romano, citing RMC Sport's Fabrice Hawkins, confirmed PSG sources now say the deal is off entirely, pointing to a breakdown between the club and Suzuki's representatives right at the point of signing.
Why PSG Cancelled the €35m Zion Suzuki Deal
According to Le Parisien, the collapse came down to money that had nothing to do with the transfer fee itself. Suzuki's agents asked for a commission higher than what had already been agreed upon between the parties.
Les Parisiens' sporting adviser Luis Campos rejected the request. Campos is then said to have told his counterparts at Parma that the club was abandoning the move entirely for this summer's window. PSG have taken a similar stance before.
Only weeks earlier, a move for winger Yan Diomande also collapsed after disagreements over late commission demands from the player's representatives. Club sources insist PSG are unwilling to increase payments to agents simply to complete a deal, even when Luis Enrique has approved the signing.
Suzuki's collapsed move also changes the picture for Lucas Chevalier. The French goalkeeper, PSG's current number two behind Matvei Safonov, had been linked with a possible move to Serie A this summer.
With Suzuki no longer arriving, Chevalier is now expected to remain in the squad and compete for opportunities behind Safonov instead of facing an uncertain future.
Aston Villa Could Now Move for Zion Suzuki
Romano reports that Suzuki could now end up at Aston Villa instead. The Japan international was already on Villa's radar earlier in the window as cover for Emiliano Martínez, whose own future has been the subject of persistent transfer talk this summer.
With the French champions out of the picture and Juventus having cooled their interest days earlier, Villa's path to Suzuki looks considerably clearer than it did a week ago.
