Nigeria international Benjamin Fredrick has signed a new contract with Premier League side Brentford and been promoted to the first-team officially.
The 21-year-old defender has put pen to paper on a four-year deal until 2030, with the option of extending it by a further year.
Able to operate at right-back or centre-back, Fredrick has earned a berth in the senior Brentford side this summer, just three years after joining the club on an initial loan deal.
He has joined up with Keith Andrews' squad in their preparations for the 2026-27 Premier League season, and will hope to make his mark after his 2025-26 season was cut short by a serious knee injury in November.
Inside Fredrick’s Rise From Simoiben Academy to West London
Benjamin Fredrick began his football journey in Kaduna, a city in Nigeria's North-West, when he signed for Simoiben Academy owned by Paris FC star Moses Simon.
From there, he gained experience playing in the top two divisions of Nigerian football with ABS FC and Nasarawa United, a rarity for a player that young.
The selectors for the national team spotted him playing in the league and invited him to their U-20 national team squad, and he played at the Africa Cup of Nations and U-20 World Cup in 2023.
Despite interest from around Europe, the 18-year-old opted to move on loan to Brentford B, the reserve team of the Premier League side.
Fredrick continued to play for the B-team and received occasional invitations to join the matchday squad for the main side under ex-manager Thomas Frank, while his loan move was made permanent in 2024.
He was named as the Players' Player of the Year for the B-team a year later due to his impressive performance. He was invited to join Nigeria's senior team for the Unity Cup in London in May 2025, as a number of senior pros had failed to show up for the mini-tournament.
The youngster took the opportunity with both hands, making his senior international debut before he played a single senior match in Europe, and played in all of the Super Eagles' remaining FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
How His Belgium Loan Accelerated His Development
Benjamin Fredrick chose to move on loan to newly-promoted Belgian outfit FCV Dender last summer for his first taste of senior European football.
The young defender quickly established himself as a fine player, with his technical ability and composure setting him apart from other young players.
Fredrick went on to make 15 appearances for the club before he sustained a knee injury in training in November, three months into the new season.
The injury cost him a place in Nigeria's AFCON squad, ending his season abruptly. The Bees, however, saw enough in those three months of senior football to convince them that he is ready for Premier League football.
Heading into the 2026-27 season, the versatile defender will now look to stake his claim once more after nearly eight months on the sidelines.
What Young Players Can Learn From Benjamin Fredrick's Career Path
Fredrick's career so far is proof that young players can bet on themselves to thrive even in the most hostile of environments.
He placed a huge bet on himself as a youngster by shunning an extended stay in the academy system in Nigeria to turn pro early, playing in one of the world's toughest leagues.
Instead of moving to the uncertainty of senior football with one of his other suitors in Europe, the defender chose to take a step back and learn, starting from the basics, with Brentford B.
Fredrick's path to the Premier League has required him to show a willingness to learn, humility, and mental fortitude well beyond his years.
Now 21, he will play in Keith Andrews' side as they look to build on a 2025-26 season in which they missed out on Europe by goal difference.
