Freddy Bernal progresses with Chelsea and England Under-19s
Bernal's steady form has been matched by international progression, as well as sustained progression at club level.
After representing the Young Lions across various youth brackets, including U-17 and U-18 levels, Bernal earned an invitation to England's U-19 squad during the September and October international window.
This international experience offers Bernal further opportunities to develop his composure and decision-making against different opponents.
Bernal has joined in first-team training under Xabi Alonso since Emiliano Martinez picked up his injury, indicating the club's thinking with respect to his progression.
What young players can learn from Freddy Bernal’s development
Bernal’s journey highlights how progressing through an academy from a young age can provide continuity, familiarity with a club’s methods and opportunities to advance through its age groups.
Modern goalkeepers are increasingly expected to contribute in possession as well as make saves. Bernal’s distribution, positioning and shot-stopping can be assessed together when evaluating his development.
Opportunities to play above their age group can help young players adapt to higher levels of competition, although progression ultimately depends on performance, development needs and available opportunities.
