Manchester City midfielder Rodri has refused to rule out a future move to Real Madrid, though the Spain international insists his immediate focus remains firmly on the upcoming World Cup.
The 29-year-old, who won the 2024 Ballon d'Or after a outstanding campaign for club and country, is entering the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. That situation has naturally sparked speculation over his long-term future, with Real Madrid reportedly monitoring developments.
Rodri Breaks Silence on Real Madrid Transfer Rumours
Rodri was asked directly about the growing rumours linking him with a move to the Spanish giants while away on international duty.
Rather than dismissing the reports outright, the Man City star acknowledged that transfer talk comes with the territory when a player's contract situation becomes uncertain.
“Well, I’m trying not to make too much of it, but it is part of my job, especially when a player has been nearing the end of his contract for some time – it’s only natural that names come up,” Rodri told reporters.
His response is unlikely to silence speculation, particularly with Real Madrid continuing to search for long-term midfield reinforcements.
Manchester City contract situation explained
Rodri was one of Pep Guardiola’s most important players and has established himself as arguably the best holding midfielder in world football during his time at City.
However, with his current deal moving towards its final 12 months, uncertainty inevitably follows.
Neither the club nor Rodri have publicly indicated that talks over an extension are close to being finalised, leaving room for interest from elsewhere.
Los Blancos have previously targeted elite midfield talent capable of succeeding ageing stars, and Rodri’s profile, experience and Spanish roots make him a logical candidate.
Why Rodri is prioritising the World Cup
Despite the growing noise surrounding his club future, the Spaniard made clear that transfer discussions are not his current priority.
La Roja are preparing for the World Cup in North America, where they face Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.
Rodri suggested that, were it not for the tournament, his position might be different.
“But anyway, I’m very calm, I know exactly where I stand, and yes probably if there hadn’t been a World Cup, I might be in a different situation now but with a World Cup on the horizon, my responsibility is to stay focused,” he added.
“We’re here to talk about the World Cup and everything that concerns my future, I’ll wait until the end of the World Cup.”
His comments leave the door open to future discussions while underlining that international duty remains his sole focus for now.
Spain star looks to Rafa Nadal for inspiration
Rodri also revealed that he has looked outside football for inspiration ahead of the tournament, urging his Spain teammates to follow the example set by tennis legend Rafa Nadal.
After watching a documentary on the 22-time Grand Slam champion, the midfielder highlighted Nadal’s humility and mentality as qualities Spain should try to mirror.
“What I told them is that we need to try to play without the ball like a small team. With that mindset of not thinking you’re the best,” Rodri explained.
Spain head into the World Cup among the favourites, and Rodri’s leadership both on and off the pitch is expected to be central to their hopes of another deep run.
