Australia have set their sights to host the men's FIFA World Cup in 2050 after they hosted the Women's World Cup alongside New Zealand in 2023.
The World Cup hosting dream was revealed by the country's Labor Party during its national conference in Adelaide this week.
Australia is gradually carving a niche for itself as the go-to destination for global sports, with the 2027 Rugby World Cup set to take place in the country, followed by the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.
Australia's World Cup dream is viewed as a federal strategy to upgrade regional infrastructure and strengthen pathways for grassroots football.
A part of the motion read: "A bid for hosting rights for the FIFA Men's World Cup by 2050 with neighbouring countries would be elevated by continued upgrading of existing regional infrastructure and establishing cross-border hosting partnerships to leverage the legacy of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics."
The Labor Party is the oldest active political party in Australia and it has been at the helm of federal power since 2022.
It is led by Anthony Albanese who is currently serving as the 31st Prime Minister of Australia.
Australia's Previous FIFA World Cup Hosting Bids
This won't be the first time Australia have declared their intention to host the rest of the world for the men's FIFA World Cup.
They competed with Qatar for the 2022 World Cup rights but received just one vote during the bidding process.
In 2023, the Football Australia made a decision not to bid for the 2034 World Cup which cleared the way for an automatic hosting ticket for Saudi Arabia.
Despite the failed attempts to land the World Cup, Australia are hoping to stage the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup with FA president James Johnson indicating that they want to keep the momentum of hosting global events.
However, they face stern competition from Brazil, England, Germany, Morocco, Mexico, Qatar and the United States of America for the 2029 Club World Cup hosting rights.
Which Countries Could Challenge Australia's 2050 World Cup Bid?
Australia are not the only country in the running for the hosting rights of the 2050 FIFA World Cup.
They could face a potential rivalry from Japan who have already mapped out a plan since 2005 to host and win the World Cup on home soil by 2050.
Meanwhile, FIFA is yet to announce the bidding cycle for the 2050 World Cup with the host selection window typically taking place between 6-8 years before the tournament.
Australia's FIFA World Cup History
The Socceroos have had a decent run at the FIFA World Cup since their debut appearance in 1974.
They have played in consecutive editions since 2006, with their best finish being the round of 16 stage in Germany (2006) and Qatar (2022).
At the recently concluded World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, Australia finished as the second-best team in Group D and they managed to reach the round of 32 where they were knocked out on penalties by Egypt.
