The trend of raiding domestic academies for the best young talent has continued this season, with movements taking place between sides in the English football pyramid.

Manchester United are the latest side to join the trend, picking up highly-rated winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham Hotspur on a permanent basis.

Thompson is not a regular academy move, as he is expected to team up with Michael Carrick's first-team squad for pre-season this summer.

He becomes their fourth addition after Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Karl Darlow.

Manchester United Seal £8m Agreement for Tottenham Winger Tynan Thompson

United have announced the signing of Thompson on a long-term deal following his spell at Tottenham.

The Red Devils have invested an initial £4 million to sign the 18-year-old, with a further £4m to be paid as add-ons based on first-team milestones.

Tottenham retain a 15% sell-on percentage as well as matching rights for the talented youngster.

United see the deal as similar to their signing of Ayden Heaven, where the youngster was brought in from Arsenal for £1m but immediately established himself as a first-team player.

United beat Bundesliga side Hamburg to the signing of the youngster, who signed a new contract with Tottenham in May 2025.

Thompson asked to leave the North London side for personal reasons, following the decision of his family to relocate.

Thompson's Impressive Record At Tottenham Academy

Tynan Thompson was an electric winger in the youth ranks of Spurs, dazzling with his pace and trickery on the ball.

The teenager made 18 appearances in PL2 in the 2025-26 season, scoring five goals and providing four assists against U-21 opposition.

He also starred in the UEFA Youth League, where he scored seven goals and provided two assists in only seven appearances in the competition.

Thompson featured prominently for the U-18 team in the 2024-25 season, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists in 28 appearances across all competitions.

The 18-year-old is an accomplished goalscorer at youth level, and is also very capable of creating opportunities for his teammates.

He played for Tottenham's first team in pre-season last summer, and was included in the matchday squad for three of their games during the season.

Why United Are Fast-Tracking Tynan Thompson

Thompson is set to skip academy football entirely in his first weeks at Man United, and will train with Carrick's team.

The England youth international is set to be fast-tracked and tested during pre-season, with a place in the squad rotation up for grabs.

The teenager is set for a significant leap, but stands a chance of becoming a first-team regular like centre-back Heaven.

He will get his chance to impress while the club looks to sign a starting left winger this summer.

He may be sent back down to the U-21s and make the occasional senior appearance for the club as part of the developmental process ahead of him.

What Young Players Can Learn From Tynan Thompson's Journey

Thompson has impressed in the academy ranks at Tottenham, playing very well against elite opposition domestically and in Europe.

The teenager believes in his ability to translate his qualities to senior football, and feels like he is ready to make the jump to the next level.

Young players must back themselves and believe in their abilities first before anyone else.
