The Portuguese talent pool has been deep for quite some time now. Seemingly producing world class, exciting talent every year.

The likes of Joao Neves and Matheus Fernandes are ones you might of heard about more recently. But I will also reveal some of the lesser known talents now that could be household names in the near future.

Geovany Quenda - 19

Becoming the youngest Portuguese Champions League goalscorer in history and youngest goalscorer in Sporting Lisbon's history already shows the potential levels Quenda can reach in the near future.

He is already receiving high praise from the likes of the Portugal National Team manager Roberto Martinez. In a press conference Martinez said, "Quenda has a quality that is not normal at 17".

Geovany Quenda's main strengths are his ball control, lightning speed and versatility.

When he was first called up to play for Sporting in 2024 under Ruben Amorim despite being a natural right winger he played on the right as a wingback and impressed with his talent and versatility.

In addition to being voted Young Player of the Season, he made a name for himself as a key player by helping them win the domestic double of the Primeira Liga and Taca de Portugal.

The wonderkid signed a contract with Chelsea for an estimated £42 million, and he will join the Premier League team in the summer of 2026. The future is almost incredibly bright at just 19 years old.

Rodrigo Mora - 19

The youngest professional debutant in the countries' history. Rodrigo Mora has been receiving plaudits for his elite vision and promising technical ability.

Despite Porto's disastrous season, Mora had a wonderful debut year. Regardless of his youth, the team centered their whole attacking strategy around him, and he finished the 2024-25 Primeira Liga season with 10 goals and four assists, an outstanding return for a teenager.

In addition to securing his position as the top scorer in the 2024 UEFA European Under-17 Championship, the former UEFA Youth League joint top scorer became the youngest player to score and assist in the same game in the Portuguese top division in the previous 35 years.

Though his development will depend on consistency, comparisons to Joao Felix are being thrown arond; his potential is still undeniable.

Man United have reportedly sent scouts to watch Mora at FC Porto games. Links like that speak volumes on his ability he has shown thus far in his career.

With an aging midfield of Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Neves and others in the Portuguese national team. The Selecao fans will hope his ability can last for a while.

Joao Neves - 21

Joao Neves who out of the whole list, has had the most successful career so far. Already is a two-time Champions League winner at the ripe age of 21.

Coming up in the world renowned Benfica youth academy who are known to produce world class midfielders, he impressed the coaches with his supreme press resistance and elite technical ability.

His game is well balanced, with solid defensive work and dangerous attacking threat. Neves possesses an intelligent footballing brain which ultimately is the reason why PSG spent €60 million for his services.

His resilience in the tackle and aerial timing are impressive despite his small frame. Neves is considered one of the most intelligent young midfielders in European football at the moment and was crucial to PSG's treble-winning season last year.

Instead of being a key player in the final third, Neves's role has been mainly centred on managing tempo, linking play, and guaranteeing stability in possession.

Neves is not often recognised for scoring and assisting. However, he has already surpassed his goal total from each of the previous three senior seasons this season, demonstrating a notable improvement in his offensive effectiveness.

He has accumulated seven goals and created two assists this season in Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

Matheus Fernandes - 21

Despite his club being relegated this season. Matheus Fernandes was one of the few outstanding players that kept West Ham's survival chances somewhat reasonable throughout the season.

The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder has had a good season despite his team's relegation. Not displaying it in numbers with three goals and three assists in 29 games in the Premier League but taking shots off with 22 shots attempted throughout the season and patrolling the midfield.

Fernandes thrived being played in the no. 10 role this season letting his ability to up the tempo shine and his danger in the final third create chances.

He is a versatile player who can be deployed deeper as he has been before for West Ham and previous clubs.

His decision making and pivoting turns make him a great signing for any teams poaching for midfielders this season.

Matheus will be wanting to play at a higher level next season and with not much bargaining power in West Hams hands as they will be a division lower, Fernandes could be snapped up for a cheaper price tag.

He will definetly be a joy to watch and a player Portugal will look at calling up in the future if he carries on performing and operating the midfield at a high level.

Every generation created its own icon, such as Eusebio, Figo, and Ronaldo, and the world questioned how Portugal could possible follow in their footsteps. Perhaps the most compelling response to date will come from this generation.
