Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for his post-match comments after his team’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United in the Premier League.

After sharing the spoils with Michael Carrick’s team at the Craven Cottage on September 20, Arbeloa accused match officials of being biased with their decision.

The Spanish coach claimed that referee Peter Bankes favoured Manchester United with his decision regarding foul calls.

Fulham took an early lead in the game through Lisandro Martinez’s own goal but they were denied their first win of the season by Matheus Cunha’s deflected shot in the 89th minute.

Why Has the FA Charged Alvaro Arbeloa?

On Wednesday, the FA confirmed that it has found Arbeloa guilty of misconduct with his remarks that question the integrity of Premier League officials.

The former Real Madrid manager has also been given an opportunity to defend himself until Thursday, October 1.

“Alvaro Arbeloa has been charged with misconduct for comments made after the Premier League fixture between Fulham and Manchester United on Sunday 20 September,” the statement read, per BBC.

“It is alleged that the Fulham manager acted in an improper manner by making comments in a post-match interview that imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official.

“Alvaro Arbeloa has until Thursday 1 October to provide a response.”

What Did Alvaro Arbeloa Say About the Manchester United Draw?

Arbeloa appeared frustrated in his post-match press conference after Fulham's second draw of the season, which left them without a win after five Premier League games.

He expressed his displeasure with the free-kick awarded after César Palacios' challenge on Harry Maguire, 35 seconds before Manchester United's equaliser.

Arbeloa told Sky Sports: “All fouls for them. You can see before they scored, the foul against Maguire, he's a guy who is 100 kilos. Every decision was for them.

"And I knew. I knew after the game against Man City that they [would not] let Manchester United lose here. We deserved a little bit more.

“We were so close. So, so close. We were a little bit unlucky again. We knew it would be difficult against this big team.

"Also we knew what happened last week. We have seen what the referees have been doing all the match so it was a difficult game. And we were unlucky."

The 43-year-old Spaniard later appeared to tone down his comments in the same press conference, saying that his English was not good enough to explain himself clearly.

“My English is not so good," he said. "Maybe I explain myself so bad and I prefer not to say anything about the referees because you never know.

"When you say something that you don't have to say, it's better to stay calm, focus on the performance of my team and focus on the next game.

"I'm not really happy. Like I said, I need to be focused and put my energy in all the things that I have to improve.

"[Maguire] is a very big guy and maybe it wasn't a foul. But it's ok. Like I said, I prefer to analyse the game - players, systems and it's the best for win.

"You know when you draw a game like that, maybe you're a little bit frustrated."

What Could the FA Charge Mean for Alvaro Arbeloa and Fulham?

Arbeloa’s punishment is unknown but any suspension could be a blow to Fulham who are currently 19th in the Premier League table.

They are level on two points with bottom-placed Tottenham Hotspur and they are one of the three teams yet to win a game in the English top-flight this campaign.

Fulham are scheduled to visit Ipswich Town for their next Premier League game on October 10, after the international break.
