Arsenal have agreed to sell Fabio Vieira to German outfit Hamburg, bringing an end to the midfielder’s four-year spell at the club, during which he made just 49 appearances. The Portuguese midfielder has travelled to Germany for a medical.
As the summer window is in its final days, both clubs are working to complete the paperwork before it closes. Sky Sports News has reported a fee in the region of £7.7m (€9m).
The timing is significant. Arsenal agreed to send Gabriel Jesus to Barcelona on the same day, helping the club reduce the number of attacking options in the squad before the deadline.

The two clubs have been talking since early summer, and for most of that period, they were talking past each other. Arsenal wanted close to €18m (£15.5m) for a player they signed from Porto for a reported £30m-plus in 2022.
Hamburg’s opening offers were closer to €8m-10m (£6.9m-8.6m). Neither side made much progress through July and August.
What changed things was a face-to-face meeting rather than another round of calls. Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa travelled to London to meet Arsenal’s hierarchy, including sporting director Andrea Berta, and the two sides reached a basic agreement on the fee within days.
Not every outlet has reported the same figure. BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel, put the fee closer to €10m (£8.6m), while a separate report suggested €12m (£10.2m). Whichever figure proves accurate, Arsenal are recovering only a fraction of what they paid for Vieira.

Vieira arrived with genuine pedigree, having supplied 14 assists in his final season at Porto. None of that translated to the Premier League. He made 22 appearances under Mikel Arteta in his first campaign, starting only three, and he featured just 11 times the following season.
A groin injury didn’t help, but the bigger issue was tactical: Vieira was never able to displace Martin Odegaard from the No. 10. Rather than sell outright, Arsenal sent him out on loan in consecutive summers.
Porto took him back for 2024-25, but their option to sign him permanently later expired. Hamburg picked him up on loan last season instead, and that move gave his career a much-needed lift. Vieira scored seven goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances.
This made him one of Hamburg’s most productive players as the newly promoted side found its feet in the top flight.
Hamburg had a buy option worth more than €20m (£17.1m) in the loan deal but chose not to trigger it, hoping instead to negotiate a lower permanent fee after it expired.
That decision was a major reason for the standoff this summer, with Arsenal reluctant to accept a fee well below the option Hamburg had previously turned down.
