Kevin Viveros was shown a straight red card after stamping on Vasco da Gama defender Cuiabano during Athletico Paranaense’s 3-1 home defeat in the Brasileirão.
The dismissal rules the Colombian striker out of his side’s next league match against Flamengo and could lead to further punishment.
The incident occurred in the 77th minute at the Arena da Baixada, with Vasco already leading 3-1. Viveros stamped on Cuiabano’s stomach while the defender was on the ground, prompting referee Ramon Abatti Abel to send him off.
Fans React To Kevin Viveros' Stamp On Cuiabano
The incident sparked strong reactions among football supporters online, with several calling for Viveros to receive a lengthy suspension.
One fan criticised the striker's actions, writing:
“Should be banned for a long time; football may be a rough sport, but doing these things is absolutely horrendous.”
Another questioned why similar incidents involving players on the ground appear to be happening more often:
“I’m confused, there’s a number of people kicking out at people on the floor recently. What’s the difference between this and getting kicked in the head?”
A third supporter accused Viveros of trying to deny responsibility after the incident:
“I wish I had the sort of blind confidence that this dude had to try and pretend he was innocent after an obvious dirty play like that.”
Another described the incident as “cold-blooded aggression”, adding:
“No halfway to describe it. Hope the poor guy didn’t get hurt too badly.”
Athletico head coach Odair Hellmann also admitted that his side struggled to recover after Vasco's second-half comeback, with the dismissal making matters worse.
“The team completely left the match, could not react, conceded the third goal from a set piece and then had no capacity to react. We also had the sending-off, which further damaged our possibility of getting something from the game.”
How Long Could Viveros Be Banned?
Viveros will miss Athletico’s away match against Flamengo on 18 November following his automatic suspension. However, the incident could attract further disciplinary action from Brazil's Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD).
No additional suspension or punishment length has been confirmed. The timing is particularly difficult for Athletico.
They have collected just one point from their last four league matches, losing three, and now sit fifth in the standings with 54 points after 34 games, according to Globo.
With four fixtures remaining, Hellmann's side are still chasing a top-four finish to secure direct qualification for the 2027 Copa Libertadores group stage. Losing their leading scorer for the trip to Flamengo adds to the challenge as they approach the end of the season.
