The Norwegian was charged with misconduct under FA Rule E3.1 after his controversial goal at Carrow Road was allowed to stand despite strong protests from the Norwich players and coaching staff.
Heggebo appeared to use his arm to help the ball into the net during West Brom’s 2-1 victory, with the incident occurring in the 75th minute.
The officials on the pitch did not rule the goal out, meaning West Brom were allowed to take the lead in their first Championship match of the new campaign.
However, the incident was subsequently reviewed by the FA, with Heggebo charged with what has been described as the “successful deception of a match official.”
The West Brom striker contested the charge, but an independent regulatory commission ultimately ruled that the offence had been proven following a hearing.
As a result, Heggebo will now serve a two-match suspension.

The incident has sparked debate over how players are expected to react when accidental handball situations occur inside the penalty area.
West Brom defended their forward throughout the disciplinary process, arguing that the contact between the ball and Heggebo's arm was accidental.

“The club will now write to the FA requesting clarification on how a player is reasonably expected to react should similar circumstances arise in the future,” West Brom said.
The Baggies also reiterated their support for Heggebo, insisting that his character and integrity remain unquestioned.

The forward's controversial finish put the visitors ahead in the 75th minute, despite Norwich's immediate complaints that the ball had struck his arm.
The Baggies then appeared to have secured all three points when Jimmy Jay-Morgan doubled their advantage with just three minutes of normal time remaining.
Norwich did manage to respond in stoppage time, with Mathias Kvistgaarden pulling one back in the first additional minute.
The hosts were unable to find a second, however, as West Brom held on for a 2-1 victory.
That result gave the Baggies an ideal start to their Championship campaign, although the attention surrounding the match has since shifted towards Heggebo's controversial goal.

The suspension means West Brom will now have to manage without one of their forwards for their next two Championship fixtures.

West Brom also defeated Rotherham United 4-1 in the Carabao Cup, securing their place in the second round.
They are scheduled to host Burnley on Sunday before travelling to St James' Park to face Premier League side Newcastle United in the next round of the Carabao Cup.
The Baggies then face a busy run of Championship fixtures, including matches against Middlesbrough, Charlton Athletic, Watford, Derby County, QPR and Wolves before the next international break.
For Heggebo, the immediate focus will be on serving his suspension as the wider debate surrounding the incident continues.
