Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League meeting with Barcelona has sparked controversy beyond the pitch after a provocative pre-match display from home supporters drew criticism from the visiting club.
The European showdown at the Parc des Princes featured an intense atmosphere, with the Parisian crowd unveiling a horror-themed banner that quickly became one of the talking points of the night.
The incident has added another layer to the rivalry between two of Europe’s biggest clubs, with the fallout now extending beyond the result as questions emerge over the imagery and messages displayed in the stands.
Barcelona report PSG tifo to UEFA after chainsaw display
Barcelona have reported Paris Saint-Germain to UEFA following a controversial Halloween-themed tifo displayed before Tuesday’s Champions League fixture, according to ESPN.
The banner, unveiled by PSG supporters behind one of the goals at the Parc des Princes, depicted a masked figure wielding a chainsaw to destroy Barcelona’s crest.
It was accompanied by the message “Massacre à la parisienne”, which translates as “Massacre, Parisian style”. Supporters also used pyrotechnics to create the impression of sparks coming from the chainsaw, adding to the dramatic visual effect.
According to Spanish outlet La Vanguardia, Barcelona intended to raise the display with UEFA’s match delegate after the game. Reports also stated that the Catalan club objected to other banners containing offensive messages directed at the team.
The incident has renewed scrutiny of the atmosphere surrounding major European fixtures and the limits of provocative fan displays.
While elaborate tifos are a longstanding part of football culture, the violent imagery used in this case has attracted particular attention because it depicted the destruction of an opposing club’s crest.
UEFA will now be able to consider the incident through its usual disciplinary processes. Any potential action against PSG would depend on the governing body’s assessment of the circumstances.
PSG defeat Barcelona 4-2 as injuries mount
The controversy unfolded on a difficult night for Barcelona, who suffered their first defeat of the season after losing 4-2 to the reigning European champions.
PSG made a strong start, with Désiré Doué opening the scoring before Barcelona responded through Xavi Espart. The visitors then levelled again through Lamine Yamal, but the hosts found another gear in the closing stages.
Vitinha restored PSG’s advantage before Fabián Ruiz added a fourth goal to seal an impressive victory and maintain the French side’s perfect start to the Champions League campaign. The result also ended Barcelona’s 11-match winning streak.
The match was not without its injury concerns. Barcelona lost Dani Olmo in the first half after he was forced off following a knock, while PSG forward Ousmane Dembélé also had to leave the field with a suspected thigh problem.
The hosts suffered further setbacks after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and captain Marquinhos were both forced off during the second half with it confirmed that the Georgian has ruptured his right ACL and will miss the rest of the season.
The fitness of those players will be monitored as both teams return to domestic action, with the extent of the injuries still requiring assessment.
For Barcelona, the defeat represents a setback in Europe, but the controversy surrounding the pre-match display has ensured that the fixture will be remembered for events in the stands as well as the result on the pitch.
With the club having referred the incident to UEFA, attention will now turn to whether European football’s governing body takes any further action.
