Day 14 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) delivered a mix of controversy, heartbreak and ruthless efficiency.

It was the second day of the knockout rounds of the ongoing tournament in Morocco which reminded everyone just how tight the margins are at this stage. Tanzania were eliminated by Morocco under controversial circumstances.

South Africa tried to make a late surge but could not find a way to upstage Cameroon, who will now face Morocco in the quarters. Here are the five moments that defined the drama at the ongoing competition.

Brahim Diaz continued his hot-goalscoring streak at the tournament, scoring his fourth goal for Morocco as they beat Tanzania 1-0.

The Real Madrid forward has now scored in every game at the tournament. He becomes the first Moroccan player to score at four consecutive AFCON matches, underpinning his importance to the host’s title push.

The former Manchester City man’s strike was pure class. He hit a powerful shot from a tight angle that squeezed past the Tanzania keeper and settled a tense contest.

4. Tanzania’s Extraordinary miss.

Before the controversy that followed later on, Tanzania had already suffered a moment they will replay for years.

In one of the most agonising moments of the tournament, Simon Msuva missed an open goal with Morocco keeper Yassine Bounou out of position. The chance was golen, and the move proved disastrous.

At AFCON, opportunities against elite teams are rare. Tanzania created one that would have rewritten history, but football’s cruelty struck at the worst time.

South Africa’s AFCON 2025 journey came to an end following a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon in the round of 16.

After falling behind to two well taken Cameroon goals, Bafana Bafana pushed hard in the closing stages. Evidence Makgopa’s late strike gave them hope, but it arrived too little too late to spark a full comeback.

Despite flashes of quality and a spirited finish, South Africa were left to rue slow starts and missed moments that ultimately cost them a quarter final place.

Cameroon showed why experience at this stage is important, as they beat 2023 semi-finalists South Africa 2-1.

Junior Tchamadeu opened the scoring before Christian Kofane struck just two minutes into the second half, finishing calmly from a precise cross to put daylight between the sides. That goal proved decisive.

Cameroon did not dominate possession, but dominated moments that mattered. They were efficient, composed and brutally effective when chances arose.

The most talked-about moment of day 14 came in the dying seconds of Tanzania’s clash against Morocco.

With time almost up, Tanzania players appealed furiously for a penalty after what appeared to be a clear shove by Adam Masina inside the box. The referee waved play on and did not consult VAR. He instead issued yellow cards to Tanzania players, who continued protesting after the games.

This decision denied Tanzania a chance to take the game to extra time. Regardless, Tanzania exit AFCON 2025 with their heads held high.

They reached the knockout stages for the first time in history after three previous attempts. Although they have yet to win a single game at the AFCON stage, their incredible rise is a sign of good things to come from them.

Day 14 of AFCON 2025 proved marginal moments can make very huge differences. Morocco will now be taking on Cameroon in the second quarter final clash next Thursday.

On to day 15!
