Callum Wilson’s time at West Ham United looks set to end almost as quickly as it began. Just five months after arriving on a free transfer from Newcastle, the 33-year-old striker is close to agreeing on a mutual contract termination with the club.

What was meant to be a smart short-term addition has turned into a brief and frustrating spell, with both player and club now looking for a clean break.

The main reason behind Wilson’s sudden exit is simple. West Ham brought in two new forwards in January, Pablo Felipe and Taty Castellanos. Their arrivals pushed Wilson down the pecking order under Nuno Espírito Santo, leaving him as a third-choice option.

For a striker at this stage of his career, limited minutes are hard to accept. Wilson wants to play regularly, not sit on the bench while the team fights relegation.

Despite his reduced role, Wilson’s output has not been poor. He has made 18 appearances in all competitions, 17 of them in the League, scoring four goals and adding one assist in just over 800 minutes.

That works out to a goal every 203 minutes, a decent return in a struggling side. He has also slightly outperformed his expected goals, showing he can still deliver when chances come.

Wilson’s relationship with Nuno has reportedly become strained. His role has changed, his starts have dried up, and his incentive-based contract has suffered as a result.

Nuno confirmed ongoing discussions, saying both sides have been honest about the situation. Wilson knows where he stands, and the club understands his desire to move on.

With West Ham reshaping their attack, Wilson is now exploring options elsewhere. A January move, possibly abroad, looks likely.

For both sides, this feels like the right moment to move forward separately.
