Chelsea have agreed a double deal for Mykhialo Mudryk and Tosin to join Spurs.
Tosin will join Spurs on a permanent deal worth £7m + add ons, which marks more profit for Chelsea in a summer where they have already raised over £200m+.
Despite Mudryk having several options, including Leeds and Brentford, a deal has now been done with rivals Spurs for a loan, plus the option to buy him next summer, for £75m.
It’s a deal that the player wanted. However, sometimes the player should not have the control, especially if Chelsea believe in him for the future.
The whole point of a loan move would be for Mudryk to be successful and then return next summer and be re-integrated. With the move to Spurs, Chelsea place major risk of Mudryk falling in love with Roberto De Zerbi again and never wanting to come back. Spurs now have that option to buy him.
Chelsea should never be doing Spurs favours for players who still have the potential to be really good, or are still good currently.
It seems like a deal that has business first over rivalry. Mudryk will play under De Zerbi, and if he develops, which is supposedly Chelsea’s whole aim, then he will help Spurs, one of Chelsea’s biggest rivals.
The thought of that is just wrong. There is no guarantee Chelsea and Spurs are not battling for similar spots come the end of the season.
If Spurs wanted Mudryk, and Mudryk wanted Spurs, the reply simply should have been ‘permanent deal only’.
It has to be regarded as nothing but disappointing to see Chelsea loaning their huge rivals a talented player after supporting him for so many months behind the scenes during his sanction.
Maybe no one should be surprised though. It was reported by The Telegraph last summer that Chelsea had no intention to ‘hijack’ the Spurs and Xavi Simons deal, as work had been put in to ‘mend the relationships’ between clubs after years of not doing any deals together.
Rightly so, in my opinion.
