At 38 years old, Javier Hernandez, better known as Chicharito following memorable spells with Manchester United, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy, has joined USL Championship expansion side Atletico Dallas, marking a return to American soccer.
However, the striker is joining a newly formed club that is yet to play a competitive match. Atletico Dallas will enter the second tier of the American soccer pyramid at the start of the 2027 season as part of the league's expansion.
Despite not taking to the pitch until next year, Hernandez is expected to "contribute to the project immediately". The Mexican has been without a club since leaving boyhood side Chivas Guadalajara following the expiry of his contract last November.
The signing also ends speculation that Hernandez had quietly stepped away from football following his Chivas departure, with the striker increasingly moving into punditry work, including appearances with Fox Sports during the recent World Cup.
Chicharito will become Atletico Dallas' first-ever signing, joining manager Peter Luccin, who was appointed in February, as the expansion franchise prepares for its debut USL Championship campaign.

Furthermore, Chicharito will begin his Atletico Dallas journey at the iconic Cotton Bowl Stadium, which can hold up to 92,000 spectators and will serve as a temporary home during the club's early years.
The franchise has plans to eventually develop a soccer-specific stadium as it looks to establish a long-term identity in Dallas.

On July 27, Atletico released a video message from Hernandez welcoming supporters to the project, saying: "Hey Dallas, I'm here. Very excited to make history with you. See you soon guys."
The 38-year-old also outlined his ambitions beyond simply playing, stating: "I believe Dallas deserves a club that reflects its passion for football, its diversity, and its future."
"I want to help create a winning culture, inspire young players across North Texas, and give our supporters a team they can believe in from the very beginning. I didn't come here simply to finish my career. I came here to help build the future of football in Dallas."
