Scheduling Controversy Sparks Debate
Nigeria forward Samuel Chukwueze has called for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be respected on the same level as the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship, amid debates over the tournament’s timing.
AFCON 2025, hosted in Morocco, took place between December 21 and January 18, clashing with the busiest phase of the European club season. European clubs have voiced concerns about losing key players during crucial league fixtures.
National Duty Comes First
Speaking to On Sports TV, Chukwueze emphasised the prestige of Africa’s premier tournament.
“Everybody wants to play in AFCON. It’s one of the best competitions in the world,” he said.
“You have to respect the AFCON the same way you respect the European Championship or the World Cup.”
He acknowledged the scheduling issues but stressed that national duty is non-negotiable. As Samuel passionately noted, Chukwueze believes the commitment to national duty should always be respected regardless of scheduling conflicts:
“We understand they scheduled it at the wrong time of the year, but when it’s important and you get recalled, you have to go, you don’t have any choice. Your club can’t stop you.” he explained.
Chukwueze also criticised narratives downplaying AFCON due to its timing:
“Saying it’s not a good competition or not a great tournament is unacceptable,” he added.
“Yes, the timing may not be perfect, but AFCON deserves respect.”
Impact on the Pitch
Chukwueze has already made an impact for the Super Eagles, helping them secure a 2–1 win over Tanzania in their Group C opener.
They followed this up with a thrilling 3–2 victory over Tunisia, securing their place in the knockout stages. In that match, Lookman scored the second goal, beautifully assisted by Osimhen, helping Nigeria edge past their opponents in a high-stakes clash.
Next Challenge: Uganda
With qualification confirmed, Nigeria now face Uganda, who are still contesting for a spot in the knockout rounds. The Super Eagles will aim to maintain momentum and assert their dominance as they push deeper into the tournament.
AFCON Deserves Respect
AFCON continues to be the ultimate stage for African footballers, showcasing top talent and thrilling matches. As Chukwueze insists, regardless of timing, Africa’s premier tournament deserves the respect it commands on the global stage.
