Cole Palmer is set to suffer summer heartbreak by missing out on Thomas Tuchel's final 26 man England squad.
Sources all over X have been leaking the squad news this evening, with the full squad set to be officially announced on Friday afternoon.
It is also understood that Chelsea defender Levi Colwill will miss out, although that particular decision will likely have come down to it being too soon for him to play regular games again, after only recently coming back from a long term ACL injury.
An Up and Down Season Has Cost Palmer
Make no mistake about it, Palmer has been nowhere near his best this season. The 24-year-old has netted nine goals in 24 matches, but only provided one assist, and has been plagued by fitness issues all season.
Palmer has had a recurring groin injury this season, which requires day to day monitoring, leading to a noticeable lack of confidence in his game this season.
While an in form Palmer plays his best football on instinct, this season has seen many matches where the forward has struggled to make an impact, often attributed with a lack of want to pass forward and create chances, or take shots in positions he usually would.
For England, he has not scored since Euro 2024, and has only completed one camp under Thomas Tuchel.
A Positive for Xabi Alonso
While no doubt heartbreaking for Palmer, and all the other Chelsea players who are set to miss out, new manager Xabi Alonso will take confidence from the fact that some of his most important squad members will get to have a full pre season under him.
Alonso will be tasked with restoring confidence and working with the medical department to get the best version of Palmer back for the 2026/27 season.
For Palmer, he has someone in the dugout who not only has experience playing in midfield as a player, but a manager who has also masterminded the success of Liverpool attacker Florian Wirtz, who was sold for £116 million last summer.
Wirtz scored 34 goals and provided 33 assists in two seasons under Alonso, and the Spaniard could deploy Palmer in a similar role next season.
