Cristian Volpato is reportedly under investigation after allegedly returning a positive roadside drug test for cocaine following two traffic stops in Sydney.

The 22-year-old Australia international, who represented the Socceroos at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, was allegedly stopped twice by New South Wales Police during the early hours of Friday morning after exceeding the speed limit.

Authorities have alleged that an initial roadside drug test returned a positive result for cocaine. A secondary sample is expected to be analysed as part of the standard testing process, and no criminal finding has been made at this stage.

Who Is Cristian Volpato?

Born on 15th November 2003, Volpato was born and raised in Camperdown, an inner western suburb of Sydney.

With Italian grandparents and a very Italian name, it wasn't long before a move across the world came coming for the 6ft 2in winger. Volpato attended the prestigious rugby school St Joseph's College, a private school with over 1,000 students each year.

Volpato began his youth career with Sydney United before spending time in the academies of Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.

His breakthrough came in 2020 when AS Roma signed him to their academy. After making his senior debut in Italy, he joined Sassuolo in 2023, where he established himself as a regular Serie A player.

Internationally, Volpato represented Italy at every major youth level, making his final appearance for the Under-21 side in 2025. Having never featured for Italy's senior team, he later switched his international allegiance to Australia and represented the Socceroos at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

What Has Allegedly Happened So Far?

New South Wales police said Volpato was allegedly clocked driving at 109km/h, going 50km/h over the speed limit, when he was stopped on Sydney’s Anzac Bridge at around 1 am on Friday morning.

Volpato was subjected to a roadside drug test which resulted in the alleged positive cocaine result, said New South Wales police.

Volpato's BMW Coupe was pulled over twice during the night, firstly at roughly 11:05 pm before being pulled over again for speeding at approximately 1am. For now a second sample will also be examined while Volpato’s driver’s license has been suspended for six months.
