Dani Ceballos is back where it all began. The midfielder has completed his return to Real Betis after leaving Real Madrid, signing a three-year contract that will keep him at the Seville club until June 2029.
The move brings an end to a summer of uncertainty for the 30-year-old, who had been looking for a new club after his contract with Madrid ended a year earlier than originally planned.
For Ceballos, though, this is about more than simply returning to familiar surroundings. It is an opportunity to show that Real Madrid were wrong to decide that his time at the club had come to an end.

Ceballos left Betis for Madrid in 2017 after establishing himself as one of the most promising midfielders in Spanish football. His time at the Santiago Bernabéu never quite developed into the consistent role he would have wanted, with competition for places and spells away from the club limiting his opportunities.
He pushed for an exit this summer despite having a year remaining on his contract, and Madrid ultimately allowed him to leave early. Betis were the club most persistent in their pursuit, with a return to Seville having been linked almost every summer since his departure.
Now, Ceballos has the chance to write a very different chapter of his career.
Returning to Betis gives him the opportunity to become an important figure at a club where he already knows the surroundings, the expectations and the connection with the supporters. More importantly, regular football can allow him to demonstrate what he is still capable of at 30.
That makes the move particularly significant for Ceballos. He does not need to publicly frame his return as a response to Real Madrid, but his performances will inevitably provide the clearest answer to the decision that was made this summer.
His desire to return was evident during the negotiations. Ceballos even shared a photograph from a chapel on Instagram while waiting for the move to materialise, accompanied by the words “confío en ti, Dios”.
Betis, meanwhile, had to work on their squad and wage budget to make the deal possible. The club have been working on several exits to create room, while also looking at the possibility of strengthening other areas of Manuel Pellegrini's squad.
Back to Where it All Began
There is also an immediate question over Ceballos' availability in Europe. With Betis facing a tight UEFA Champions League registration deadline, his inclusion in the squad for the competition is far from straightforward.
But regardless of how quickly he can make his European return, the bigger picture is clear.
Ceballos has returned to Betis with something to prove. Real Madrid no longer saw him as part of their plans; now, back at the club that gave him his first major opportunity, he has the chance to show that there is still plenty left in his career.
Nine years after leaving Betis for Madrid, Ceballos returns to Seville with a trophy cabinet that few players could complain about. Yet there is still a feeling that his career has unfinished business. At Betis, he now has the chance to decide what that final chapter looks like.
And there may be no better place for him to do it.
