DR Congo got their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 campaign underway with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Benin in Group D at Stade El Barid in Rabat.
The Leopards showed patience and organisation throughout, grinding out a result that puts them in an early position to push for progression from a competitive group.
The game’s decisive moment came just after the quarter-hour mark.
DR Congo midfielder Théo Bongonda latched on to a long ball forward, stepped in behind the defence and finished low into the corner to give the Leopards the lead in the 16th minute. His movement and composure in the box proved the difference on a day when chances were at a premium.
After taking the lead, DR Congo managed the game with a controlled midfield structure, showing the kind of tactical discipline that coach Sébastien Desabre will be pleased with heading into future group matches.
Benin offered moments of enterprise, but could not find a way past DR Congo’s organised defence.
The Warriors worked hard to create openings and tested their opponents at times, but their final ball and attacking rhythm lacked the consistency to seriously threaten the Leopards’ lead.
Despite spells of possession and effort, the visitors couldn’t alter the scoreline, leaving them with plenty to think about as they prepare for the rest of Group D.
This win gives DR Congo three points and an early advantage in a section that also features Senegal and Botswana. It sets up a potentially intriguing tussle for group supremacy as the tournament progresses.
