Most Premier League fans would be forgiven for forgetting about Trézéguet’s spell with Aston Villa. However, the current Al Ahly winger is an important player for Egypt and will be integral in their quest for AFCON glory.

Trézéquet signed for Aston Villa in July 2019 for £8.75 million, arriving from Kasimpasa. He had enjoyed an impressive two season stint for the Turkish top-flight club; registering 25 goals and 16 assists.

His spell in the Premier League wasn’t quite as fruitful. In his first season, the Egyptian bagged seven goals in 41 games across all competitions.

A second season in claret and blue was disrupted by injuries, with an ACL injury curtailing his campaign in April. After fighting back to fitness he made one appearance in the 2022/23 season in a January match-up against Brentford.

A loan move back to the Turkish Super Lig with Basaksehir in January 2023 revived Trézéquet back to his best; recording six goals and three assists in 13 games.

Spells with Trabzonspor and Qatari side Al-Rayyan followed before a move back to his homeland with Al Ahly, the club he started his career with.

Since making his Egypt debut as a 19 year old against Kenya in August 2014, Trézéquet has made 70 appearances for the Pharaohs, scoring 22 goals.

His first taste of AFCON came in 2017, as Egypt made their way to the final. They would lose at the final hurdle again in 2021. Now at 31 years old, this may be his best chance to help his nation across the line.

Trézéguet was integral in the Pharaoh’s finishing top off their AFCON qualifying group undefeated.

With four to his name, the former Anderlecht man scored a third of his nation’s goals to help Egypt reach the tournament in Morocco.

If Egypt are to win their first AFCON since 2010, Trézéquet will be a key player in their success. Team-mates Mo Salah and Omar Marmoush, are no doubt the bigger names in this squad but Aston Villa’s former man might be the one to hurt opposition the most.

With defenders attention drawn to his fellow attackers and by playing with two outstanding technical players, Trézéquet finds space and has the ability to punish opposition.

His experience and consistency are brilliant assets for Hossam Hassan.
